Person talk:Sarah Gilpin (1)

Gapen's 2003 Parent Theory [10 May 2014]

Dear Ron,

Sarah Gilpin was probably born about 1730 and "probably" born December 23, 1730, and was probably the daughter of Joseph Gilpin & Mary Caldwell. She is the only Gilpin that I am not sure of. Originally I found out that Sarah Gilpin born in New Jersey (?) married Joseph South b. 1719.

The proof that she was Sarah GILPIN is that a later descendant was named Gilpin South. I searched and searched for Gilpin Families in New Jersey and could find none or that had any Sarah Gilpin born in New Jersey. You have to understand that both Chad's Ford in PA or Brandywine Hundred in Delaware are both very close to New Jersey. After a lot of checking, resulting in nothing to found for Sarah Gilpin at all and noticing that her first South child was born about 1749, that meant that she married Joseph Gilpin about 1748, and was probably age 18 at marriage, much younger than Joseph South, and 18 years subtracted from 1748 = 1730.

After a lot of research, I found that the only family she could possibly belong to is Joseph Gilpin and Mary Caldwell, as their first daughter Ruth Gilpin was born December 23, 1730. I believe that Joseph Gilpin and Mary Caldwell had a daughter named Sarah, except that her birth date was not listed, or was "about" 1732 or so. Therefore I made an assumption that Sarah Gilpin was the twin daughter of Rachel Gilpin and changed the "about 1732" or whatever it was to December 30, 1730. Maybe I shouldn't have made that assumption, however I believe it is probably correct, as I spent a great deal of time and effort and checking records to get to that assumption. I do not believe she was born in New Jersey, however Brandywine Hundred is in Delaware and Chad's Ford is now in Pennsylvania, both of them very close to New Jersey.

It is said that the Gilpin house was used by the Marquis Lafayette during the battle of Brandywine for his headquarters, and that in later years when he came back to America and found Joseph Gilpin on his death bed, he offered him consolation. I think that Sarah Gilpin was an unrecorded baptism in 1730, that they failed to list her, that someone only listed her probable twin sister Ruth Gilpin, and failed to list the other probable twin Sarah. Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. As for Sarah Gilpin baptized June 2, 1706 at Darby MM, Darby Twp., Chester Co., PA., who married Peter Cooke, she was the daughter of Joseph Gilpin and Hannah Glover who m. Feb. 23, 1691 at Friends MM, Baghurst, Hampshire, England.

The reason that Sarah Gilpin was listed along with (the other) Sarah Gilpin estimated to be born 1730, was that during my initial research into the matter, I was looking for any or all Sarah Gilpin's born to get to the bottom of the problem, therefore I made a note about Sarah Gilpin born 1706, since Joseph South was born 1719. I didn't believe that Sarah Gilpin b. 1706 or being 13 years older, would have married Joseph South b. 1719. It was just a note that I put in for reference to the problem of Sarah Gilpin's actual birth date.

So if you find me to be wrong in this matter, please help me to solve the problem, as Sarah Gilpin is an enigma for me. All of the other Gilpin's I have listed are actual recorded baptisms. If I have "abt." then the baptism was of recorded or is unavailable to me. Dissaway South was the one who purchased my Ancestor Zechariah Gapen's land called Gapenton near Mapletown, Monongahela Twp., Greene Co., PA. That is why the Cemetery on top of the hill is called the South Cemetery, as Zachariah Gapen's land was later owned by Dissaway South and Ruamah Eaken (sp?) That Farm is now owned by Mr. Jim Greysneck.

I hope I have cleared up your question, however even I, myself, being truthful, had to make a good guess.

Sincerely, Mel Gapen, Lakeside, San Diego Co., CA, May 28, 2003
