Notes added by User:Parris [Needs extensive cleanup and corrections] NOTE not all the names below are the exact same people in england related to george teator of kentucky it only demonstrates that the same existed in the areas of England were George Teator kentucky and some instances SAMUELwhere their parents and grandparents came from back in Englannd Wales Ireland and Scotland Some of the Roja family retained the original Spanish form. A Daniel Roja, for example was buried at Broome in 1687. A Henzey (Hennezel)and a Bague were also buried in the same cemetery between 1676 and 1680 The name Tittery, however, is an anglicisation of "Thietry," the name under which the family had emigrated to England. According to LaDaique, there is solid evidence that "Thietry," one of the four families cited in the Glassmaker's Charter, The Tittery daughters intermarried with members of the Rogers family in the Stourbridge area. The Rogers were glassmakers descended from John Roja, descent whose family name had become properly anglicized to "Rogers."14 Lorrainers, The practice of intermarriage only between glassmaker's families was carried forward into England. The names became anglicized, but marriage practice continued along ancient lines to a late period. It mattered not a whit whether the families of the couple came from the same countryAn interesting case in point was the marriage of a Tittery with a Rogers. THE TETER AND MANCHESTER FAMILIES. By William T. Lindsey. Capt. Samuel Teter, who was one of the conspicuous figures in the early history of Washington county, Pa., where he owned large tracts of land, settled there with the Doddridge's and Wells's in 1773, in what is now Independence township, on the farm of 1,000 acres which he sold in the spring of 1797 to Isaac Manchester. It was named in the warrant "Plantation Plenty," and lies near the present village of West Middletown.Capt. Teter was a resident of Washington county he became the commandant of Fort Doddridge^ as related by his nephew, the Rev. Joseph Doddridge. After the sale of his farm to Mr. Manchester he went to Ross county, Ohio, settling on Lower Twin Creek, removing in his old age to the home of one of his sons-in-law, a McDonald, near Marysville, Union county, Ohio, where he died October 8, 1823 Capt. A certificate book was kept by the clerk for the Virginia land commissioners who heard proof of claims for settlement and preemption rights by early settlers in Kentucky. The first entry was made at St. Asaphs on 13 October 1779; the last entry was made on 26 April 1780. It stated that the "Court of Commissioners for the County of Kentucky is dissolved." The published data is separated into different lists, which include those who received certificates of settlement and preemption warrants from the commissioners and those who did not. The second list is designated "Claims Rejected by the Commissioners" in this publication. This data was obtained from volume 21 of the Register of the Kentucky Historical Society (1923) . The material was later reprinted with the title Certificate Book of the Virginia Land Commission, 1779-1780 by the Southern Historical Press in 1981. The original records, which were in the possession of the Fayette County Court Clerk in 1923, cannot be located. Samuel M. Wilson in his First Land Courts of Kentucky (Lexington, 1923) explained the origin of the commissioners and their services to Kentucky settlers. The subject of land acquisition has also been covered by several of my articles. The main purpose of this chapter is to display the records alphabetically with emphasis on the type of certificate received and the location of the claim.

I mention this discrepancy to show that history, at least sometimes, is incorrect. Finally, on January 13th the ships raised anchor and began the long, uncomfortable trip to America. Their commander, Major General Edward Braddock, had sailed just before Christmas to get to Virginia in time to arrange for the troops’ arrival.

Nonconformists were people who did not belong to the established church. In England, up until 1533, this meant the Catholic Church, but that then changed when in 1559 the Act of Uniformity made the Church of England the established church. Thus from 1559, the starting point for this research guide, all non-Anglicans were nonconformists. Though Catholics, as well as Jews, were nonconformists, references to nonconformists in this guide are to the non-Anglican Protestant denominations, most prominently Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians and Quakers. Nonconformist records were therefore records kept by non-Anglican churches or other congregations that recorded details of people who did not belong to the Church of England. Although nonconformist records are, by definition, non-parochial records it should not be assumed that all non-parochial records are necessarily records of nonconformists. Non-parochial records, of which there are a considerable number in the RG collections highlighted below, were registers kept outside of the local parish church but these were not necessarily records of non-Anglicans. Some Church of England records existed outside of the usual parish structure, such as those maintained by Greenwich Hospital
An irregular or clandestine marriage was a marriage conducted by an ordained clergyman, but without banns or licence. Although they breached canon law, these marriages might still be legally valid, and could be recognised as such in English Common Law. The marriages were normally performed outside the home parishes of the bride and groom, and originally took place in prison chapels, though they were not necessarily disreputable in any way. Clandestine venues and ceremonies allowed the couple to avoid the trouble and expense of an ecclesiastical licence and afforded them some degree of privacy. The most notorious of these venues was an area in the vicinity of the Fleet prison in London known as the Liberty of the Fleet and the registers are collectively referred to as the Fleet Registers, though many were maintained by individuals and at locations beyond the Fleet prison and its surrounds. The Fleet Registers record more than 200,000 marriages (and some baptisms) performed in the Liberty of the Fleet but also at the King’s Bench prison, the May Fair Chapel and the Mint, between 1667 and 1754, the year in which Lord Hardwicke’s Marriage Act came into force, making it a legal requirement to be married in the Church of England, though Quakers were exempt from this law. It has been estimated that in the 1740s, nearly 15% of all marriages in England were celebrated in the Fleet. Most of the parties, not surprisingly, came from London and neighbouring counties. this group would strongly appear as the forefathers of of George Teator of Kentucky and the Samuel Teeter of PA and Ohio. Beads or amulets, however, were exportable. Thousands of beads were also found in the cargo of the vessel. Beads remained important trade goods for the next three thousand years. Eye-beads became popular around the Mediterranean, and across trade routes as far as Imperial China. The peculiar eye-like designs were formed by concentric circles of colored glass placed around the bead. We continue our extracts from the Medway Church book 1756 -- A letter came to use from the Hon. Jonathan Bryan, Esq., one of his Majestie's Council for this colony, giving an account of some Creek Indians being slain by some persons from the Northward, who had settled themselves pretty high upon the Great Ogeechee River, in a quarrel about some creatures which the Indians had taken from them; that the Indians were very much irritated and declared they must have blood for blood; and that all means to pacify them seemed to no purpose, and advising us with expedition to build a fort for our safety. People are very much alarmed with the news, and consultations were immediately had about the building and place for a fort, and it was determined by a majority, that it should be at Captain Mark Carr's low down, and upon the river near the sound, at about seven or eight miles distance from the nearest of the settlement of the Society, which accordingly was begun on the 20th September, 1756. October, 1756 -- We hear that the Indians, upon the arrival of one who was wounded in the quarrel, and the relation he gave them of it, were as uneasy about it as ourselves, blamed their people for stealing the English horses, and have sent them runners, to spare us of their own, and desire the continuance of their friendship. 1757, July 11 -- Last night received letters from some of our neighbors who were going on a trading voyage to Augustine, and taken by a French privateer, the captain of which made one of the company pretty large offers to bring him in at St. Catherine's and told them he was informed of a rich vessel lately arrived there. Our neighbours having agreed to the ransom of the vessel and cargo, were let go by the privateer, and meeting with another of the inhabitants returning in a canoe with part of the said letters, and in thema dvised us to take care of ourselves, upon which we were called down this day to Sunbury, where we raised a couple of batteries, and made carriages for eight small cannon, which were at the place. 1757, July 16 --- Before day, we were alarmed by the fire of cannon at Sunbury, whither we repaired, and a boat went out, but could discover nothing. 1760, May 27 -- An express arived from the Creek Nation, informing us that several of the traders were killed there, upon which many of the out-settlers left their settlements. 1773, Aug. 2 -- Our dear and much honoured pastor, the Rev. Mr. John Osgood, departed this life. The first house for public worship was erected on Medway Neck, near the plantation of Mr. Thomas Mallard. About 1754, measures were taken to build a new meeting-house. It was erected at the Cross Paths, on the north side of the north branch of Newport Swamp, 44 feet by 36, with a gallery 18 feet, and pitched roof, hipped at one end, and a small steeple at the other. The steeple was placed west, and the pulpit north. This house was destroyed by fire in 1778, by a body of armed men, under the command of Colonel Prevost. At the close of the Revolution, a coarse building was put up near the place where the old meeting-house stood, 40 feet by 30, with posts in the ground, and the sides filled up with poles. The present meeting-house, of which a view is annexed, was built in1792. The body of the house measures 60 feet by 40. There is a large cemetery connected with this church, contiguous to it, which is happily illustrated by the accompanying engraving. The view of the cemetery, as also that of the church was taken from a daguerreotype politely furnished us by a promising young artist of Liberty. NOTE this what the conditions George Teter and Roger Quarles found when they arrived in Georgia. this was most likely the elder George Teter probably the father of George Teator of Kentucky Book Title: Dead Towns Of Georgia On the 23rd of January, 1734, Mr. Oglethorpe, accompanied by Captain Ferguson and sixteen attendants,- including two Indians,-set out from Savannah in an open row-boat, followed by a yawl carrying provisions and ammunition, upon an exploratory expedition to the Southern frontiers of Georgia mouth of the Alatamaha; and,-as an outpost and barrier against Spanish invasion,-to erect a strong fort on the high bluff on the western side of St. Simons island.lthough formal session had been made by the Lower Creeks of all lands along the sea-coast from the Savannah to the Alatamaha river, extending westward as high as the tide flowed, and including all islands except a few which the Indians specially reserved for the purposes of hunting, fishing, and bathing, no English settlements had, at that early day, been formed south of the Great Ogeechee river. Fort Argyle,-garrisoned by Captain McPherson and his troop of Rangers,Aborigines had not then removed, and their canoes might be seen passing and repassing to and from Hussoope, [Ossabaw], and Cowleggee, [St. Catharine], islands and the main. To the quiet woods and waters of this semi-tropical region the English were strangers. The Bermuda grass which, at a later period, so completely covered Sunbury bluff, did not then appear, but magnificent live oaks, in full grown stature and solemn mien, crowned the high-ground even to the very verge where the tide kissed the shore. Cedars, festooned with vines, over hung the waters. The magnolia grandiflora,-queen of the forest,-excited on every hand the admiration of the early visitor. The sweet-scented myrtle, the tall pine, the odoriferous bay, and other indigenous trees lent their charms1741,- despite the presence of a guard of soldiers there stationed by General Oglethorpe,-the Indians made an attack very early in the morning, killing several of the soldiers and servants, wounding others, "locking down the women and children in the cellar," pillaging the house, and carrying away the booty in a large boat belonging to the plantation. In locating their plantations amid the swamps of St. John's parish, Strange to say, their dwellings and plantation quarters were invariably located on the edges of the swamps, in utter disregard of the manifest laws of health. In such malarial situations was the entire year passed. Their houses at first were built of wood, one story high, with dormer windows in the roofs, small in size, without lights, with no inside linings, and with chimneys of clay. The negro-houses were made either of clay or poles Men often went armed to church for fear of the Indians. The country was filled with game. Ducks and wild geese in innumerable quantities frequented the rice-fields. Wild turkeys and deer abounded. Bears and beavers were found in the swamps, and buffalo herds wandered at no great remove to the southward and northward. There was no lack of squirrels, raccoons, opossums, rabbits, snipe, wood-cock, and quail. Wildcats and hawks were the pest of the region, while the cougar was sometimes heard and seen in the depths of the vine-clad swamps. The waters which they held were alive with fishes, alligators, terrapins, and snakes. The Indians being in the vicinity, and at times indulging in acts of hostility, some of the houses of these early settlers were made of hewn cypress logs after the fashion of block houses, and were bullet proof.

They all identified themselves as Huguenots and emigrated to England en masse despite the fact that they had been granted noble status and extraordinary privileges under an official charter as Gentilshommes Verriers ("noblemen glass-makers"). The famous "Glassmaker's Charter" included four glassmaking families: Hennezel, Thietry, Thysac, and Briseval, who settled in Lorraine. By implication the charter extended a similarly lofty status to other glassmaking families in the Vôge who arrived in the region during the same period and appear to have had a common origin. Consequently they are all referred to as the "Lorrainers."
Dominique Metrevis, a glassmaker who worked in a glasshouse in Woodchester, England. .Dominique, being the Italian form of the Spanish name "Domingo," suggests that its bearer was or stemmed from one of the Spanish glassmakers who found refuge or work in the Università d'Altare before going to Treves, where he set down roots until his move to the Netherlands, and from whence he ended up in England! His surname marks the stopover of the family in (French) Treves. Nonetheless, the marriage records register Dominique Metrevis as "an Italian foreigner." and reveals that he came to England from Antwerp.28 Dominique married an Englishwoman, Mary Paslow in 1610.
A long list of truly remarkable privileges follow the opening paragraph of the lengthy document. The glassmakers were exempted from all income and other taxes and their dwelling and glassworks were to be rent-free. They were exempted from military service and from the ususal obligation to provide fodder for their liege-lord's cavalry. They were granted the right to erect their own mill for grinding their corn; to hunt "black or tan" big game with dogs and hunting harness "wherever they wish without reprimand; to catch fish with nets and fishing tackles; to freely cut down an unlimited number of trees from the royal forests for building their homes or for fueling their furnaces; to harvest the indispensable herbs and ferns whose ashes they needed for making glass; to make glass of whatever color they wish and "shall be free to have it transported and sold in all his highness's land, wherever they desire." The statutes even permitted each of the four families to keep up to 25 pigs [!] "for their own profit." In consideration of these benefits the "sum of six small florins are to be paid in two annual installments." In 1597 a decree was passed in Paris to officially declare that a nobleman did not forfeit his nobility by engaging in the trade of glassmaking. Being noble by birth, and no longer in dread of the law of forfeiture, the Gentilshommes Verriers, in consideration of certain dues, delivered up their forests to the verriers roturiers. Sydney Grazebrook, a nineteenth century researcher of the genealogy of the "Noble families of Henzey, Glassmakers Harbored little Fealty to the Countries Within Which They Resided. The art of glassmaking nonetheless declined to virtual extinction in central and western Europe during the Dark Ages after the exodus of the Jews. For many centuries the art of glassmaking was practiced sporadically on a primitive level until the Crusader Roger II invaded the rival Christian Byzantine empire and brought Jewish silkworkers and glassmakers back to his fief in southern Italy and Sicily. The Norman crusaders likewise brought glassmakers back from Palestine to France. It is not surprising that inasmuch as glassmakers were never of indigenous origin, that the patriotism of glassmakers was typically confined to their art and to the community of glassmakers at large.

These intrepid voyagers were dubbed "Phoenicians" by the Greeks. The epithet derives from the Greek word "purple." It relates to the impression made on the Greeks first arriving in Canaan by the purple-stained hands and clothes of the people along the shore producing a purple dye by boiling mollusks from the sea. They became, in Greek eyes, the "Purple People," or "Phoenicians." FROM LEBANON TO SPAIN "The further south you go, the less likely you are to see this marker. The further north and the further inland you go, the less you see of this marker. It is very Levantine," he said. The same marker was found in unusually high proportions on other parts of the Mediterranean coast where the Phoenicians are known to have established colonies, such as Carthage in today's Tunisia. Phoenicians and the Carthaginians were actively trading between both sides of the West Mediterranean, a period that spans one full millennium (c. 1200-146 BCE). The Phoenicians were known to trade as far north as the British Isles, and may have had trading posts along the coast of Portugal, Galicia, Asturias and Cantabria, which would have brought a mixture of Near Eastern (J1, J2, E-M34, T, G2a) and Berber (E-M84, R1b-V88) lineages to the region, as is observed today. Phoenician, Greek and Roman diffusions of E1b1b The classical antiquity brought new waves of colonisation across the Mediterranean. The first colonists were Phoenicians, who came from present-day Lebanon and the Tartus province of Syria. The Phoenicians possessed a variety of paternal lineages reflecting the complex ancient history of the Middle East. One of them was E-M34, which makes up about 15% of modern Lebanese Y-DNA, but was probably a higher before the Greek, Roman, Arabic, Byzantine, medieval crusader and Ottoman occupations. E-M34 is the main Middle Eastern variety of E1b1b and is thought to have arrived with the Proto-Semitic people in the Late Copper to Early Bronze Age. The Phoenicians would have spread E-M34 to Cyprus, Malta, Sicily, Sardinia, Ibiza and southern Iberia. The art of glassmaking remained in the lower Mesopotamian milieu for 800 years. During the 16th century B.C.E., the art moved up along the Euphrates and Tigris rivers into Arameia and Canaan, following the same route as that taken by the tribe of Abraham. It arrived in Canaan as a full blown industry. A Canaanite merchant vessel that foundered off the Turkish coast at the turn of the 14th century B.C.E. is one of the most spectacular archaeological finds of modern times. The tons of cargo included scores of glass ingots averaging some 25 pounds each. They were being exported for remelting into glassware somewhere around the Mediterranean.6 Glass, once manufactured, is easily melted and reformed into glassware. The producers of the primary material, glass, zealously retained their secret manufacturing process for almost three thousand years. The name Tittery, however, is an anglicisation of "Thietry," the name under which the family had emigrated to England. According to LaDaique, there is solid evidence that "Thietry," one of the four families cited in the Glassmaker's Charter The Tittery daughters intermarried with members of the Rogers family in the Stourbridge area. The Rogers were glassmakers descended from John ROJA . Tittery, The Huguenots in France were largely "artisans, craftsmen and professional people." In the 17th century, Friesian cows were introduced to Norfolk from Holland. Cattle from places such as the Netherlands were also sent to Norfolk to be fattened on the marshes before being sold at St. Faiths Cattle Market near Norwich The route from Norfolk to the Low Countries was the most common trading voyage of the Middle Ages and, at this time, Flanders (followed by the Netherlands) became trading posts for goods from all over Europe and the Orient. Materials that have been traded from the Low Countries to Norfolk include glass, pottery, metalwork and cloth, whilst wool, in particular, was traded from Norfolk to the Low Countries. 17th century Delft potters imported clay from Norfolk and delftware tiles and pottery into Norfolk.Although not specifically 'trade', 18th and 19th century smugglers moved spirits and tobacco from Holland to Norfolk. NOTE Read the will inventory of George Teator of Kentucky. He did raise this special type of Walloon Cattle Friesian Cows Friesian cows were introduced to Norfolk from Holland
