Person talk:Samuel McCorkle (2)

New Data [11 June 2009]

Hi Jim

I'm making some adjustments in the new data you've added to the data fields for McCorkle (2), making them align better with the subject of the input box.

  • Is the spelling of "Thytira" church correct? If he died in Augusta County, how come he's buried in NC?
  • The reference to "The Rowan Story" By James S. Brawley doesn't seem to be appropriate for a box labeled "Military". There may be information in the Rowan Story that describes his military career, and that could go into the box, but not a simple reference. I'll move this over to "notes" or something, but if the information about his military career needs to go into the box.
A WeRelate Source Card for "The Rowan Story" does exist. The InLine citation for it is Source:Brawley, 1953
  • On "MySource". I think this is a bit of a open hole in WeRelate, as the distinction between "Source" and "MySource" is not symmetric. My Thinking is that "MySource" should be the dumping ground for what I refer to as "Ephemeral Sources", like GedCom's or personal web pages. What Dallan uses it for are transcripts and images of actual documents---e.g, will's, especially images of wills. Its defintely NOT publications like "Chalkely"---that's a "Source". There are several forms that a citation for Chalkely can take:
Formally, it should be Source:Chalkley, Lyman. Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia
Informally, I prefer the inline citation format of Source:Chalkley, 1912 which is a redirect taking you to the formal page title above. I prefer this because it is a greatly shortened reference, and easier to use in writing narratives
One or the other should be what appears as a citation---not a MySource document.--Q 08:29, 23 May 2009 (EDT)
  • Its probably NOT a good idea to include someone's email address on a page. Even though they may have no problem with it, and even if its disquised (in this case witht he two @ signs, its still not a good idea. Citing his webSite as a "MySource" document is I think an appropriate use of MySource, but there's a need to have a link to the site itself---not just saying "McCorkle Family Roots Site". Of course, that's a personal web page, and the link will eventually rot, as will his personal address, etc. But that's what I think a MySource document is intended for. Again, Dallan has a different view here, but he doesn't seem to have a problem with my usage either. He's still feeling his way on this, I think. Q 08:55, 23 May 2009 (EDT)

Bill, regarding the "military" source you referenced, I've noticed that on some gedcoms that I've loaded, the types of information from the gedcoms don't always come across to werelate correctly. Must be a mis-match from Family Tree Maker in the gedcom load process. Unfortunately, I don't always go back and review each and every person I've loaded to make sure it was loaded incorrectly, so there are probably a few still out there.

Regarding this Samuel, after checking my McCorkle Book "From Viking Glory", it was pretty obvious that the person that I received a gedcom from, had him confused with another Samuel McCorkle in North Carolina, who founded the University of North Carolina. I have added an advisory on his page, to avoid future confusion. Thanks for the 'heads up' on the error.

Best regards,

Jim:)--Delijim 08:38, 11 June 2009 (EDT)
