[add comment] [edit] Relation to John Wesley Hardin, gunman [21 January 2014]Regarding the note to the 1870 census speculating that the "son" John was likely a nephew as there was already an older son named John, I believe this speculation to be correct, and that the nephew John in question is John Wesley Hardin, son of James Gibson Hardin, brother of Robert Echison Hardin. On page 24 of "The Life of John Wesley Hardin, as Written by Himself" (University of Oklahoma Press, new edition copyright 1961), Hardin states that he arrived in Brenham around the last of January, 1870 and then went to his uncle Bob Hardin's place where he was persuaded by his uncle to take up farming with him and his boys William, Aaron and Joe. He goes on to state that he stayed there until the crops were laid by. Thus it seems likely that it was John Wesley Hardin (born May 26, 1853) who was listed in the 1870 census as a son, age 18.--Ghodges62 16:04, 21 January 2014 (UTC) |
