1920 Census Notes [25 April 2011]

[LulaBelle's comments in brackets]

[This particular census record is a marvel of fiction, accidental misinformation, bad memory, outright untruths, or total confusion.]

Jefferson County, Precinct 41, Des Moines City, Enumeration District 161, Sheet 5A, Enumerated by John W. Ward, Jr., on 9 Jan 1920.

Family No. 107

Head: R Hallman [transcribed as such; could be read as Hallmon], m, w, age 68, married. Born Alabama, parents born North Carolina. [Birthplace of parents is questionable.] General farm; Farm Sched. 21.

Wife: Mary, f, w, age 38, married. Born Georgia, parents born Georgia. [Most likely Rawleigh's 2nd wife, possibly Mary Baker, possibly married abt 1911; her age is questionable IF found marriage record is correct.]

Six persons listed as Rawleigh's sons and daughters are actually his grandchildren, the children of Jesse and Mariah. These are: Lee, 25, single [actually married 1912 but where were Ruthie and the 3 daughters they already had?]; Maggie, 23, sgl [married abt 1912; where's her husband?]; Lillie, 20, sgl [Ella Pearl, married Nov 1919?]; Myrtle, 17, sgl; Lizzie, 12, sgl; Fred, 3y6m, sgl. Lee and Maggie are listed as having been born in Mississippi [highly unlikely]. All 6 are listed as father born Alabama, mother born Georgia [also highly unlikely. Did enumerator assume, or did someone tell him, that Wife Mary above was the mother of these children??]

Brother: Henry Y [or J or Jr -- unreadable]. [Age transcribed as 70 on Fam Search but could be read as 30.] Single, born Alabama, parents born North Carolina [all questionable]. Trade: carpenter; industry: iron mine. [It is far more likely that this Henry is William Henry, Rawleigh and Sarah's SON, born abt 1879 and brother to Jesse not Rawleigh.]

Son: Jess(i)e N., m, w, 45, married, b. Alabama, parents b. Alabama. Miner in iron mine.

Daughter-in-law: Mary, f,w, 42, married, b. Alabama, parents b. Alabama. [Jesse's wife Mariah and the mother of the 6 children named above.]

Three persons listed as Foster Children, all with surname Baker: Dewey, m, w, 20, sgl, b. Georgia, miner in iron mine; Hervey or Harvey, m, 17, sgl, b. Alabama; May Bell or Mary Bell, f, 14, sgl, b. Alabama. Parents of all 3 born Georgia. [Could it be that these are children of Rawleigh's 2nd wife Mary, possibly from a previous marriage of hers?]

Boarder: Francis Pennington, f, w, age 16, sgl, b. Alabama, father b. Alabama, mother b. Missouri. [No idea who this person is or if she had any connection to the family.]
