CONNECTION TO 112 LEYES ROAD IN 1921-1925 [4 July 2012]

My grandfather has 112 Leyes Road, Custom House, London, listed as his home address when he served in the British Merchant Navy 1921 to 1925 - thi is before he settled in Australia. He (George Herbert Kane) did not know his London parents and there is suggestion he was fostered out or adopted to a family named Murphy. It is a bit of a longshot, but I am interested in this BOTELER page because of (a) the address and (b) the Norman Walter Boteler marriage in 1918 to Ellen Murphy.--Woden5 05:12, 29 May 2012 (EDT)

Hi Michael, I don't have much information on this family as they are only distantly related to my husband (Norman is his 2nd cousin twice removed). I don't know anything about his wife Ellen Murphy other than the fact that they married in 1918 and she was named as his widow. What year was your grandfather born? If Ellen was about 20 when she was married she'd have been born about 1898. Could he possibly have been raised as a sibling to Ellen? I checked the 1911 census on Ancestry.com and at that time a ships fireman named William Hyslop was living there with his wife and two children - it's listed as a 3 room dwelling and there don't seem to be multiple dwellings at that address, so it was probably a house rather than boarding house. Norman and Ellen had at least three children, Irene, June and Norman so they may have grandchildren out there who know if their grandma Ellen was raised with your grandfather. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!--Jocelyn_K_B 07:02, 29 May 2012 (EDT)

Hi there, I'm Norman and Ellens great grandson, my mum June is still alive and well and she has confirmed that your grandfather George was brought up as her uncle, after being taken in by her Grandmother (Mary Ann Murphy).--Tonyjag 10:07, 1 July 2012 (EDT)

G'day Tony & Jocelyn Many thanks for your messages. I had, in another forum, chased down a possible connection to the Hyslop family living at 112 Leyes Road, but could not establish a connection to my grandfather (George) at that time in 1911. I would be most interested in pursuing a possible link to your Murphy ancestor. I have a photo of two young girls who my grandfather described as foster sisters. Apart from his mercahnt navy service, the photo is the only possession/knowledge I have about his London connections. I am not certain how to post the photo to this forum, nor given that June is living, would wish to post it publicly. If you would like to communicate by email, my email address in Australia is [email protected]. Cheers Michael--Woden5 05:52, 4 July 2012 (EDT)
