Nicholas Wahl, son of Nicholas and Julia (Kirchmann) Wahl, and Nicholas Wahl, son of Nicholas and Louise (Pfeiffer) Wahl, are two different men. They are both listed in Margaretta, Erie, Ohio in the 1860 census (although the age of the former is incorrectly assigned to his brother George).

The Nicholas Wahl who married Susan Karbler was the son of Nicholas and Julia (Kirchmann) Wahl. This is known because:

They were living with Nicholas and Julia in the 1860 census.

They were living in Townsend in 1900, and Nicholas' immigration year is given as 1852 (not 1849 when Nicholas and Louise (Pfeiffer) Wahl are known to have immigrated).

When Nicholas died in Townsend in 1912, his mother's maiden name is given in his death record.
