Pieters vs. Pietens [18 June 2012]

I believe the original surname was Pieters.

1822 birth Gosling Jans Pieters (Jan Jans Pieters & Froukjen Goslings Lant)
1825 birth Klaas Jans Pieters (Jan Jans Pieters & Froukjen Goslings Lant)
*1827 death Jan Jans Pieters
1853 marr Klaas Jans Pieters (Jan Jans Pieters & Froukjen Goslings Land)
1859 marr Gosling Jans Pietens (Jan Jans Pietens & Froukjen Goslings Lant)
*1860 death Froukje Goslings Land

Jan Jans Pieters's death certificate uses Pieters, as do the births of the children above. Also, Froukje(n)'s death certificate show Land rather than Lant and there are siblings in the area that also used Land, so I would lean towards that preference. --Jennifer (JBS66) 08:18, 18 June 2012 (EDT)

Thanks! So this really is a name change and not just a typo then, right? So Jeltje and her full siblings, looks like even one of her half-siblings, are solely Pietens as per their birth records, right? And Klaas and Gosling get Pieters as primary name and Pietens as alt name. (And Lant gets Land as her primary name, OK?) Should Jan Jans get Pietens as an alt name or not, since the change seems to have happened after his demise?

(BTW, do you have any better luck than I did looking for the second child born before the 1853 wedding? I only see Froukje....)

It could have originally been a typo that continued with use for some reason (maybe to stand apart from other members of the family?). I would say yes to your questions :) Jeltje was born as Pietens, Klaas and Gosling's primary surname would be Pieters, Froukje Goslings Land would be primary, you could add Pietens in a note on Jan Jans' page if you don't want to add it as an alt name (just another option). Regarding the second child - there was Aafke --Jennifer (JBS66) 10:53, 18 June 2012 (EDT)
Aaaugh! I thought starting my searches at 1848 would be plenty generous with an 1853 wedding. Thanks! BTW, Aafke married in 1869 using the last name Pietens. --Pkeegstra 11:30, 18 June 2012 (EDT)
