Civil War [18 July 2011]

Which regiment did Natthew Packard serve in? We're trying to mark all of the Civil War veterans here on WeRelate. Thanks! --Amy (Ajcrow) 11:34, 17 July 2011 (EDT)

Hello, Amy!

Matthew Hale Packard served in two different units of New York Cavalry: Company E, 9th Cav, in which he enlisted 29 September 1861 and from which he was discharged 24 June 1862; and Company L, 15th Cavalry, in which he enlisted 14 December 1863. From this unit he was transferred to Company L, 2nd New York Provisional Cavalry (probably a redesignation of the 15th Cavalry to reserve status) sometime in 1865 -- first shows up on muster roll for May-June 1865. All this is from his pension record from the National Archives. He was my great-great grandfather.

Hope this helps!--[email protected] 23:59, 17 July 2011 (EDT)

That helps a lot. Thanks! I found the unit history for the 15th NY Cavalry on the Civil War Soldiers System website. Last sentence: "Consolidated with 6th New York Cavalry June 17, 1865, to form 2nd Regiment Provisional Cavalry." He was probably in it just long enough to be mustered out :-) -- Amy (Ajcrow) 07:28, 18 July 2011 (EDT)
