Confused [15 July 2015]
Removed the following, it having little credibility. It is confused, while accusing others of being confused.
Deane shows one Matthew (son of Matthew, grandson of Matthew) marrying Mary Chapin and a different Matthew (son of Joseph, grandson of Matthew) marrying Mary Bacon. Unlike what is found below the marriage to Mary Bacon is recorded in 1708, all of which rules out the "married three times" scenario presented. Whether Deane got this correct is one question, but it is clear what he says. The record in 1712 is for Mary "Chaping", so saying "which is wrong" is excessively harsh for a paragraph itself containing errors. --Jrich 15:38, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

DISTANT RELATION OF NEWSPAPER PUBLISHER FRANK GANNETT, POET HENRY WADSWORTH LONGFELLOW AND SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN FOSTER DULLES
From "The Litchfield Family in America," courtesy of Wes and Pam Blair:
"Matthew Gannett, Jr., b. 1688, bapt. as adult, at Scit.,'29-4-1718,'was, very probably, married three times. First, at Scit. June 30, 1712, as Matthew, 'Jr.,' to Mary Chapman (prob. of Marshfield). Author Deane is confusing in his treatment of the Gannetts, and calls her Mary Chapin, which is wrong. Two ch. by this marriage, viz.: Deborah (m. Job Cowing, bapt. '11-8-1713,' and Seth (d. young), bapt. '12-3-1717.' Matthew married, second, in Scituate, in 1718, Mary Bacon, by whom he had ch., viz.: Elizabeth, m. abt. 1738, Nicholas Byram, & in 1746, Thomas Hayward; Mary, b. 1721, m. 1744, John Edson; Susanna, b. 1723, m. 1746, David Edson; Mehitabell, b. 1726, m. 1747, Zebulon Cary; Sarah, b. 1729, m. Daniel Pettingill, 1755, and Amos Ford of Marshfield, 1766. Matthew married, third, 1750, Martha, widow of Dr. Joseph Byram, and dau. of David Perkins. Martha d. 1779, aet. 74. Authorities: Scituate town and church records; Hist. Bridgewater, p. 170."
WARNING: Matthew's death date shown here is before the marriage date to Martha Perkins cited by "The Litchfield Families."

Frustration [15 July 2015]
There is quite of backlog of information on this family that simply appears wrong.
Some recent publications are copyrighted and not available that may help. But all that is available is snippets or less. Source:Maynard, William Benz. History and Genealogy of Maynard, Maurer and Related Families says "The confusion between records of Matthew and his cousin, Matthew, aggravated by the fact that both married women named Mary and had children named Mary and Samuel, is cleared by" Source:Gannett, Michael R. Gannett Descendants of Matthew and Hannah Gannett of Scituate, Massachusetts. But how it is cleared, or whether that is valid, is unknown.
The grandfather Matthew d. 1694. He had two sons Joseph and Matthew.
After 1694, the son Matthew, now called Sr., lived until 1703. His wife is not known, but he had a son Matthew b. 1685, one of the two cousins mentioned.
The other cousin was the son of Joseph, b. 1688.
The following records may be found (Scituate unless noted)
- Hannah Gannett "d. Mathew", b. 1702.
- Matthew Gannett Sr. d. 1703.
- Matthew Gannett m. 1708 Mary Bacon.
- Matthew Gannett Jr. m. 1712 Mary Chaping
- Mary Gannet, w. Matthew, d. 1713, age 35.
- Matthew Gannet of Scituate m. 1714 Mary Neal (Pembroke VRs)
- Thomas Parris m. Hannah Gannet 1724.
- The will of Matthew Gannett of Scituate, dated 1732 names wife Mary, daughter Hannah Parris, other children Matthew, Samuel and Mary.
The following observations show that Deane's History of Scituate is probably backwards.
In 1708, the 1688 Matthew is not technically old enough to marry, so is probably not the one who married Mary Bacon. Her birth, based on her age at death would be about 1673.
In 1712, the Matthew known as Jr. would be the Matthew b. 1688, s/o Joseph.
Hannah Parris born in 1702 could not be the daughter of Matthew and Mary Bacon. Her birthdate is probably not wrong based on the date of marriage. The date of the marriage to Mary Bacon is variously reported as 1702, 1708, or 1718 depending on whether the website wants to make her the mother of Hannah, to follow the records, or to make her the wife of the younger Matthew, respectively.
Neither of the cousins would, in normal circumstances be old enough to have a daughter b. 1702, the one being 14, the other 17.
The Deborah b. 1712 to Matthew Jr. would appear to be the daughter Deborah Cowen mentioned in the will of Matthew of Bridgewater in 1764, and the Susanna bp. in Bridgewater in 1724 to "Matthew of Scituate" would appear to bhe the daughter Susanna Edson also mentioned.
The birth of Hannah (Gannett) Parris 6 years before the parents recorded marriage is still unexplained. Further research is needed. At this point, no reasonable explanation presents itself.
But it appears Matthew, s/o Matthew, b. 1685, m. (1) Mary Bacon, m. (2) Mary Neal. And Matthew, s/o Joseph, b. 1688, m. (1) Mary Chaping, m. (2) Bridgewater 1750 Martha Byram. This is also the conclusion of this website which cites the Gannett book as a source, and so has presumably seen what it says. --Jrich 21:55, 15 July 2015 (UTC)
