Discussion on "Mary", wife of Robert Tate being a McClung [30 December 2015]

You are WRONG! Why don't you bother to actually read what is posted on Find-a-Grave. "Death: Margaret is the daughter of John McClung and Elizabeth Alexander. She Married Robert Tate and they had 12 children." + - I've been studying this line for 30 years. Do you honestly think you know more than I do! And the McClung family book was wrong for the get-go. P.S. There are two Robert Tate's, father and son. The son died and was buried in Texas. I have both Ancestry and Geni. Plus I have every artifact related to this line.

1. The two Robert Tate's in question were born only 10 years apart, how could they have been "father and son" as you claim?

a. Robert Tate (1745-1806), of Augusta and Russell County, VA, was the son of Robert Tate (1720-1794) and Mary (your line?)
b. Robert Tate (1755-1832), who married Margaret "Peggy" McClung (1755-1839), daughter of John McClung (1731-1817) and Elizabeth Alexander. This Robert was the son of John Tate (1710-1801) and Mary Mitchell. These are the Robert Tate and Margaret McClung on Find-A-Grave, and I see no information here to prove otherwise. The children of Margaret listed on her Find-A-Grave Page all agree with the information contained here on WeRelate.
Again, how would these two Robert Tate's be "father and son"? They appear to be un-related....

2. Have you recently checked the Find-A-Grave page for the Robert Tate that was married to Margaret McClung? The submitter had her attached to the WRONG Robert Tate and his page has been corrected. Margaret's husband was Robert Tate of Middlebrook, NOT Robert Tate of Russell County.

3. Your Robert Tate's wife was "Mary" as named in his will. So who are "Mary's" parents? What records do you have to prove that "Mary" was a McClung?

4. You claim "Mary" was born in Henrico County, Virginia (based upon your most recent change), what proof do you have of this and which McClung family in Henrico is she related to?

5. Mary is NOT identified as a McClung in several posted genealogies on other genealogical sites:

"Mary" wife of John Tate
Rootsweb Page identifying her only as "Mary
Genealogy.com page identifying her as "Mary McCline", with no parentage listed, and no sources to prove her maiden name

6. You claim one of these Robert Tate's is "buried in Texas"? I see no evidence whatsoever that either of these Roberts even travelled to Texas, which did not even become a state until 1845, which was 13 years AFTER Robert Tate of Middlebrook, Augusta County, Virginia had died; and 39 years AFTER Robert Tate of Russell County, Virginia died.

Would appreciate your rebuttal response, with proof of what you claim. If you have been studying this line for 30 years, then you surely have the proof to back this up. BTW - I have been researching and helping to correct families such as the Tate's in early Augusta County for over 40+ years. Many of the families are confusing, there are several early settlers with the same names as others, and some have been very difficult to unravel and correct, so you're not alone if that is the case here.

Thank you and best regards.--Delijim 06:36, 30 December 2015 (UTC)
