Person talk:Mary Rawson (34)

From Perne Rawson (1): Is this two people? [20 December 2010]

One gets confused on a page named Mary Rawson, but with the name field saying Perne Rawson.

Newbury VRs show the birth of Perne, daughter of Edward Rawson on 14 or 16 Sep 1646. [Normally, sons were given mother's maiden names as their given names, not daughters, hence the double check that it is a daughter.]

Weymouth VRs show the death of Mary Torrey in 1692, age 50. While age at death is often off by a year or two, this is a big enough gap to wonder about. That plus there seems to be six years between Edward (1638) and David (1644) shown on this page. This is plenty of room to add another daughter in 1642. Not just the death date, but also the marriage record to Rev. Samuel Torrey says Mary, not Perne.

Source:Rawson, Sullivan S. Rawson Family : Memoir of Edward Rawson, Secretary of the Colony of Massachusetts Bay from 1651 to 1686, p. 12, shows daughter Perne marrying "Rev. Mr. Torrey or Mr. Broughton". Perne is a strange enough name that it is odd that there might be any doubt. Source:Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, United States. Births, Baptisms, Marriages, and Deaths, 1630-1699 (A Report of the Record Commissioners) does records births of John (1667), Rachel (1670), Mary (1672), Edward (1673), Perne (1677) to a "George & Perne Broughton". I do not know what evidence there is that Perne m. Rev. Samuel Torrey?

It is not clear why a marriage to Mary would get matched to a birth record saying Perne? Especially when a birth in 1646 doesn't match a marriage in 1657 very well. Very few sources list all the children of Edward Rawson to facilitate an easy analysis of the whole set. But the evidence here seems pretty convincing that Mary and Perne were two different daughters. I am separating their data into two pages accordingly. --Jrich 00:14, 20 December 2010 (EST)

According to new research, Source:Schmidt, Alwin E , Jr. Rebecca's Siblings, Mary and Perne were two different individuals. Mary, b. ca. 1639-1640, married Rev. Samuel Torrey as first wife. Perne, b. 1646, married George Broughton.--jaques1724 07:02, 15 August 2019 (UTC)
