Person talk:Mary Mattoon (1)

death date [11 August 2022]

I removed the death date of 6 Jan 1782, unsourced, no location. It appears to be based on Jacobus in Families of Ancient New Haven where he assumes the "Mary Tune" that married Theophilus Merriman (and secondly Benjamin Miller) was this Mary Mattoon. However, there is a Tune family in Wallingford where that marriage took place, so there doesn't appear to be any need to make such an assumption. Meanwhile, the intention to John Miller in Springfield refers to "Mary Mattoone of Dearfield" which pretty clearly seems to mean this Mary, and since John Miller published intentions to remarry in 1715, it is assumed Mary died by then. --Jrich 15:13, 25 June 2016 (UTC)

Since we do not find another Mary Mattoon, a record of a John Miller/Mary Mattoon marriage or any children of that Miller/Mattoon marriage, it is also possible that the John Miller/Mary Mattoon marriage never occurred and that it was she who married Theophilus Merriman and then Benjamin Miller.

The "Toone/Toon/Tune" family of Wallingford seems to be a variant of the Mattoon surname. The family genealogies in both the Northfield and Deerfield histories indicate that John2, son of Philip1, removed to Wallingford sometime after the Deerfield massacre of 29 February 1703/04, and married Jerusha Hall of Wallingford. The pertinent entries in the published Wallingford vital records are as follows"

"Toone, … Ebenezer, s. Philip & Mary, 6. Sept. 17, 1738 [5:541]"
"Toone, … Eliazer, s. John & Jerusha, b. Dec.18, 1727 [5:517]"
"Toone, … Gershom, s. John & Jerusha, b. Aug. 18, 1730 [5:525]"
"Toone, … Jerusha, d. John & Jerusha, b. Dec. 27, 1709 [2:794]"
"Toone, … John, s. John & Jarusha, b. Jan. 18, 1721 [2:803]"
"Toone, … Mary, m. Theophilus Merriman, Sept. 9, 1714, by Mr. Street [2:784]"
"Toone, … Mary, d. Philip & Mary, b. June 14, 1740 [5:548]"
"Toone, … Nathaniel, s. John & Jerusha, b. July 13, 1725 [5:513]"
"Toone, … Sarah, d. John, & Jerusha, b. Oct. 3, 1707 [2:793]"

The ten children of John and Jerusha listed above are consistent with those included by Jacobus in his sketch of John Mattoon in Families of Ancient New Haven, pages 5:1155-56 and the listing in the Mattoon genealogy, page 2 (with the exception that Ms. Mattoon gives this family an extra Ebenezer, b. 1735, who really belongs to the son Philip (b. 1711). Both Jacobus and Ms. Mattoon also give this family a son Isaac whose birth (c. 1723) was not recorded.

It seems more than reasonable to assume that the "Toones" and "Mattoons" of Wallingford are the same family.--jaques1724 23:29, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

Certainly possible, but hardly sufficient to prove anything. Springfield isn't Wallingford isn't Deerfield, for example. I see no evidence that identifies Theophilus Merriman's wife beyond a name. Maybe John Miller married another Mary Mattoon (except of course that his intention is in Springfield). Maybe they didn't marry, but it appears to be a different John Miller that married Priscilla Hale/Hall. Maybe around 1800 we would expect records to be complete, but not at the time of these events, so location of only one Mary Mattoon in the records is hardly conclusive. We could blindly follow Jacobus, but he himself warns against this practice, and then some might argue to blindly follow the other secondary sources that say differently. It "needs more research", preferrably of the primary variety. --Jrich 01:47, 12 August 2022 (UTC)
