Who is Hattie Jousma? [17 June 2012]

FindAGrave and the marriage record among other places declare that Klaas's wife was Hattie the daughter of Theodore and Edna Jousma.

Edna is easy enough to find in the 1900 census, living with her son Jacob. Jacob's marriage record lists his parents as Teke Jousma and Sarah Sylstra, and they are easy enough to track down.

First question: Jacob's birth is consistently off by five years in America. Is that OK?

Second question: Who is Edna? Her 1900 census date of birth is Jan 1837, 8 years younger than Gepke Zijlstra, and the months don't match. If she is a second wife, where is the marriage record? I looked extensively both in Netherlands and in Michigan.

Finally, is Edna really Hattie's mother, or is this Hattie? Birth is off by a year and a day, but the Americanization of the name is plausible.

PS. What happened to Trijntje? And who are Katie and her father Tjerd? This Tjeerd? And this Trijntje, born in 1871 instead of 1874?

The "landverhuizers" is very interesting. It proves that if Hattie was born in Netherlands, she is Hendrikje, and also that if Edna is a second wife, the marriage was in North America (and also that Gepke was already adjusting her year of birth even then). Does it prove more than that? Is there a date to go with it? I guess that would then be the maximum age for a Hattie daughter of Edna, which might be enough to rule that out. In the 1900 census both Jacob and Edna say they immigrated in 1887; is that reliable? --Pkeegstra 11:15, 16 June 2012 (EDT)

This is quite a puzzle! According to the marriage record Hattie lived in Muskegon. On http://www.genealogymuskegon.com/Databases/Census/1894%20Census/1894censusij.htm So here her mother who seems to be 60 years old in 1894 is called Sarah, jakob should be born in 1871 and Hattie in 1875. Because her father is not mentioned hemust have died between 1880 (imm. year an 1894)--henk 15:31, 16 June 2012 (EDT) Gepke Jacobs Zijlstra is born 23 JUL 1833 so that matches this Sarah--henk 15:57, 16 June 2012 (EDT)

Here is Gepke's death certificate. Her name is listed as Gepke Cook, but I've not yet found a record for her second marriage. --Jennifer (JBS66) 16:14, 16 June 2012 (EDT)

My theory is this:

• Person:Jacob Jousma (1) = Person:Jacob Jousma (2)
• Person:Hendrikje Jousma (1) = the Hattie that married Klaas Kamp
• Person:Trijntje Jousma (3) = Person:Kate Jousma (1)

Note that both Family:Jacob Jousma and Winnie Bates (1) and Family:Brugt van der Laan and Kate Jousma (1) had daughters named Edna (one of which was born as Gepke and later called Edna). It seems that Gepke Zijlstra was also known as both Edna and Sarah. Gepke later remarried --Jennifer (JBS66) 17:04, 16 June 2012 (EDT)

OK, I told myself I really wanted to see the 1894 census, so Henk found a gem in the Muskegon Historical Society 1894 state census page, since FamilySearch has that census for Kent, but not Muskegon. That the living widow in 1894 was called the same (Sarah == Sally) as the mother of Jacob in 1899 is a convincing point. She must have decided to use Edna instead sometime over the course of that year, and so she was known as Edna in 1905 when Hattie got married. So your first two identities I agree with. (BTW, I checked Seeking Michigan for Jousma and for Edna, but not for Gepke, so I missed the death record.) --Pkeegstra 18:56, 16 June 2012 (EDT)

There are marriages recorded for persons named Trijntje Jousma in 1918 and in 1921. So that would seem to rule those two out as Katie. I have written both of them up so the next person doesn't have to go to the images. But I see that the Trijntje and Tjeerd Gerbens I was looking at were Joustras, not Jousmas. So that leaves Trijntje (3) the most likely candidate to be Katie.
