Person talk:Joseph Whipple (1)

Watchers

death date [15 August 2011]

Note: the death date on this page, 19 SEP 1740, has no source, and is almost certainly wrong, as Ipswich records show Josephs dying in 1699, and 1729, none in 1740. So I removed it.

At first I objected to Blaine Whipple's identification of this Joseph as the son of Capt. John on the basis that he had no brother Cyprian, but upon finding out that Cyprian Whipple was a brother-in-law of the widow (having married her sister), my objection was addressed. So I have gone along with Mr. Whipple's arrangement.

I maintain however that as much as I can see of the book on Elder John Whipple's descendants on books.google.com, which appears to be everything about this Joseph, there is no proof presented that ties him to Capt. John. His alleged father died in 1683 and mentioned him in his will, which doesn't help figure out a marriage in 1697 and death in 1699. The other Blaine Whipple work on Matthew's family is only snippet view, so I am unable to find out what information there might be about the other candidate: Joseph son of Lt. John. I believe Lt. John had a will, since the Whipple Genweb puts a daughter Hannah into his family based on her mention there, but unless he mentions grandchildren, I am not sure this will help since his death also precedes the 1699 death of Joseph.

The facts that are determinable from Ipswich VRs are confusing and do not indicate which Joseph married which Mary.

In Ipswich VRs, "Joseph and Mary" have the following births recorded: Sarah b. 1693, Elizabeth b. 1696, Mary 15 Feb 1698/99, and Susanna b. 22 Feb 1698/99. From the last two, it is clear that there are two couples involved.

The only relevant marriage recorded is "Whipple, Joseph and Mary Symonds, Dec. 10, 1697". According to Blaine Whipple, the Joseph who died in 1699 left a will naming wife Mary and daughter Mary. This suggests that Sarah, Elizabeth, and Susanna were born to the other couple, often represented as being Joseph Whipple and Mary Adams.

The death record "Whipple, Joseph, [died] May 11, 1699" gives no hint about which Joseph this is who died. Then the record "Whipple, Mary, wid. Joseph, [died] June 20, 1703" is apparently Mary Symonds.

There is also a death record for "Whipple, Joseph, joiner, [died] Dec. 14, 1729", following soon by his wife, also Mary: "Whipple, Mary, wid. Joseph, Joiner, [died] June 16, 1734". --Jrich 18:28, 15 August 2011 (EDT)
