Person talk:Joseph Smereczanski (1)

[29 December 2011]

1 one of his sons was born in 1908 en he came to the USA in 1911, doesn't that mean that Joseph came to the USA between 1908 and 1910? His sons came from Hamburg, isn't it logic that he came the same way? --henk 15:05, 29 December 2011 (EST)

I agree. His son Mitchel (apparently born 31 Oct 1908) arrived in the U.S. on 7 December 1910. The Ellis Island record states that he was meeting his father Josef in New York City. I've not yet been able to find Josef's immigration records. The names this family used were inconsistent (like Hoffman, Smerchansky, Delgran, Clements...) which makes the search more of a challenge. --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:33, 29 December 2011 (EST)

In the early 1900's more then 1.000.000 immigrants came from Poland and Russia, most of them Jewish. In those days more then 30% of the Czernowitz inhabitants were Jewish. On http://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/sadgura/ReischToronto.html I found a few entries with this name, but I hesitate."

The different names were all used after immigration, when they came it was most likely that they only spoke russian, which is so a different language and another alfabet. When the immigrated they were not like f.i. the Dutch, English, French, etc.. The West Europeans, knew a liitle where they were going, there were already settlements. The East Europeans were put together in "getto's in New York
