Person talk:John Wheeler (25)

Birth date wrong [27 September 2008]

Source:Concord, Massachusetts, births, marriages, and deaths, 1635-1850, p. 26: John son of Jno Wheeler born 6 12 83. Since this date (1683) is before 1753, the year when English laws switched the first month from March to January in keeping with the Gregorian calendar, the 12th month is February. December is only the tenth month before 1753, which is how it got its name. So this date is 6 Feb 1683/4, i.e., 1683 in the style of the time, but called 1684 by today's calendar.--Jrich 20:37, 25 September 2008 (EDT)

This John did not marry Dorothy Hosmer [27 September 2008]

It is not this John Wheeler that married Dorothy Hosmer. Since the death date of 1737 applies to "John Wheeler Husband to Dorothy his wife", that means the death date given here is incorrect also. This page as it currently exists is an amalgamation of two separate people.

This statement is based on Source:Wheeler Families of Old Concord, Massachusetts which identifies the John Wheeler (#19) who married Dorothy Hosmer as the son of William Wheeler and Hannah Buss. According to this source, when Dorothy's husband died and his estate was settled, it included land that had belonged to William Wheeler, showing that Dorothy's husband John was William's son.

The John Wheeler (#3016) who was son of John Wheeler and Sarah Stears, and was born on 6 Feb 1683/4, has no known marriage or death date in the above source.

The birth date of John Wheeler (#19) (Source:Wheeler Families of Old Concord, Massachusetts, p. 13, "John son of William Wheeler & hanna his wife borne, 10 : may : 68") seems a better match to Dorothy's birth in 1677 than John Wheeler (#3016) who was born 1684, and hence younger than Dorothy.

From John Wheeler (22): Wrong Family [18 March 2010]

The birth date on this page, 12 Jun 1683, is a misreading of the recorded date "6. 12. 83". Comparision with the surrounding records makes it clear that 6 is the day and 12 is the month. Before 1753, the last month of the year was February, so this is 6 Feb in the year recorded then as 1683 but now numbered 1684, i.e., 6 Feb 1683/84. This makes it clear that this is the same John Wheeler in the family of John Wheeler and Sarah Stearns, an arrangement supported by both Albert Gallatin Wheeler and George Tolman. The perils of trusting an Internet source without checking? I am merging this with Person:John Wheeler (25). --Jrich 13:48, 18 March 2010 (EDT)
