Identity of John Tate's wife Jinney [4 August 2015]

I see the information regarding John's wife Jinney being a Berry instead of Steele. This is a good place to start this discussion and perhaps you can post the specific records that prove her as a Berry?

Thanks:)--Delijim 13:03, 31 July 2015 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I can't provide specific records proving John Tate (d. 1802) married Jinny Berry. I first came across the information on Ann Blomquist's tree (at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=ann_blomquist&id=I04531) which mentioned the 1832 Pension Declaration of John Berry (brother of Jinney) stating "The other officers recollected that also, he went as a substitute for his brother in law John Tate and served one month." and that John Tate Esquire's 1801 will was witnessed by James Henry (c1763->1820) (husband of Mary Berry) and George Berry (either Geo. Jr or Sr).

I later received some information from Carol Vass, a Berry researcher, including Tates on the Augusta County personal property lists of 1782-1820 and a timeline for Jinny Berry and John Tate. They would be lengthy to post here, but I could email the files to you if you wish. --KayS 02:06, 3 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi Kay, I've spent several hours examining John Berry's Revolutionary War Pension Statement, as well as John Tate's will (George Berry, John's father, was a witness) and other documents and I'm sufficiently satisfied that you are correct and John Tate's wife was Jane "Jinny" Berry and not a Steele. I have made this change and added the rationale and sources which provide [I think] strong support for this. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

Best regards,

Jim:)

Thanks, Jim. I see you've been doing lots of cleanup on the various Tates. I think we have some problems with the birth dates for the children of John Esq. and Jinney. For one thing, Mary 'Polly' was 56y 7m at death which computes to a birth date of Jan 1773. I'll review my data and see what I can figure out. --KayS 19:26, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Jim, seems like we should remove the family group info showing Jane Steele from the person page for John Tate Esq. --KayS 19:29, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
