Wrong father? [24 February 2011]
Nathaniel's will of 1698 does not mention a son John, which would imply that if he had a son named John, said son had died by 1698, so did not marry Rachel Conkling [which happened on 13 Jan 1731/32] as speculated in the cited source (Refugees of NY), or else that he had no son John. The latter case is more probable as there are multiple Nathaniels who are more likely to be the father of this John. In particular, Nathaniel, s/o Thomas and grandson of Thomas the immigrant, although there are other candidates. --Jrich 10:04, 5 August 2009 (EDT)
- As the above comment indicated, it seems that John is included in this family only because a bunch of secondary sources copy each other, while the only primary evidence argues that he is not. There is a remote chance he is a posthumous child, but that would need evidence to make it believable. I am removing John from the family Family:Nathaniel Moore and Sarah Vail (1) because it looks odd seeing a transcript of a will that never mentions a son John, only son Nathaniel and five daughters, and then seeing a son John listed amongst the children. Without sources, it just looks like a vestigial mistake waiting to be cleaned up. I will add a wife Rachel Conklin/Conkline/Conkling to give him a specific concrete identify (that pairing is mentioned in the cited source "Refugees of 1776 from Long Island to Connecticut page 468" and that some John Moore married some Rachel Conklin is supported by good sources), and add a discussion of the various (unsupported) theories on the Person page. The presentation of so many alternatives with their sources named will hopefully make it clear that any identification of his parentage should be accompanied by, or reference, primary sources. --Jrich 18:14, 24 February 2011 (EST)
