Records of (Dr) John Hunter / Catherine Pickens and her parents [18 June 2018]

I have been working on my Hunter line - and have a brick walll because as one cousin related in the early 1960's, the person in question was disowned and removed from all family records and he even buried his own family Bible because he was upset that after his father died his mother disowned him. I do not know how accurate the report is however the cousin described the dirt on the knees of his trousers and the comments he made about being disowned.

Nevertheless I think I have found something that may interest you. I will paste the article from "Chase Your Tale" and the New England Historical Genealogical Register, 1909 below:

"From an article in the April 1909 New England Genealogical Historical Register, the following Bible information was published along with other family information. No publication information on the Bible was mentioned.

Pickens - Hunter - Parkman - Woods. - Elias Parkman6 (Elias5, Rev. Ebenezer4, William3, Elias2, Elias1), as shown by Ballou's History of Milford, Mass., p. 949, was born June 11, 1792, at Holliston, Mass., and died at Selma, Ala. The following Bible records show that he married, Mar. 3, 1809, in Abbeville District, S.C., Maria R., daughter of Dr. John Hunter and his wife Catherine Pickens who was a daughter of Gen. Andrew Pickens and his wife Rebecca Calhoun (aunt of Hon. John C. Calhoun, Vice-president of the United States, 1825-1832, and daughter of James Calhoun who emigrated from Donegal, Ireland, to Pennsylvania, in 1733, thence to Virginia, and in 1756 to South Carolina, where he established "The Calhoun Settlement" in what is now Pickens County). Gen. Pickens entered the Continental Army in 1775 as Captain of militia, served through the Revolutionary War, and rose to the rank of Brigadier-general. For gallantry displayed at the Battle of Cowpens, Jan. 17, 1781, he was given a sword by congress.Records from an old family Bible now owned by Mrs. F. A. Woodson, Denver, Colo.: General Andrew Pickens, born September 19th, 1739, in Paxton township, Pennsylvania. Rebecca Pickens - maiden name Calhoun, born 18th November 1745, departed this life on the morning of the 9th December 1814.

Andrew Pickens born 13th November 1779 died 7th December.

A son born Nov. 13th 1782 - died in infancy.

General Andrew Pickens died August 11th 1817.

An infant daughter born October 18th 1816, not named, died 11th of November aged 25 days.

Marriages Margaret A. Hunter was married to James C. Harrell Novem. 15th 1827.

Maria R. Hunter was married to Elias Parkman March 17th 1830.

Eliza B. Hunter was married to Wm. Tredwell March 10th, 1835.

Andrew J. Hunter married to Mary A. Phillipson the 19th of September 1837.

Joseph P. Hunter married to Adela Rogers May 30th 1849 [date blurred] in Mississippi.

Deaths [Dr.] John Hunter died June 17 - 1829 in the 49th year of his age.

Susannah Elizabeth Hunter died August 17th 1812. -aged 1 year 6 months and 28 days.

Ezekial P. Hunter died Apr. 18 - 1840.

Joseph H. Parkman died Oct. 16 - 1849.

Elias Parkman and Maria R. Hunter were married March 17, 1830.

Charles B. Woods and C. Alla Parkman were married June 15th, 1863.

Births Elias Parkman was born June 11, 1792.

Maria R. Hunter was born March 3, 1809.

John Mc Gee Parkman was born Jany 12, 1838.

Catherine Alla Parkman was born November 8, 1841.

Joseph Hunter Parkman was born Jan. 21, 1848.

William Elias Parkman was born Nov. 10th, 1851.

Charles Bruce Woods was born August 25, 1834.

Clayton Rogers Woods was born March 27, 1864.

John Parkman Woods was born Aug. 7, 1865.

Charles Bruce Woods died January 31, 1890.

In connection with the above, the following inscriptions from monuments in Live Oak Cemetery, Selma, Ala., will be of interest:

"Sacred to the memory of E. Parkman. Born June 1792. Died Oct. 16, 1853."

"In memory of Catherine Alla daughter of E. and M. R. Parkman, wife of Charles B. Woods. Born Nov. 8, 1841. Died Dec. 18, 1867."

"Sacred to the memory of Catherine Pickens Hunter who was born in Abbeville Dist., S.C. June 9, 1786 and died in Selma Ala. May 18, 1871, in the 85th year of her age. She was the youngest daughter of General Andrew Pickens of S.C. and wife of Dr. John Hunter. She lived a long and useful life and now rests from her labors in the bosom of her God and Savior Jesus Christ."

Maria R. Hunter Parkman was buried at Selma, Ala., May 14, 1875.
