Birth record [15 February 2015]

This is most likely Johannes Overbeeke born 19 Jan 1830 in Zierikzee, Zeeland. Father Gerrit Overbeeke and mother Jacoba Sauvijn. Found on http://www.zeeuwengezocht.nl. Wife may be Pieternella de Mooi born on 26 Jan 1834 in Bruinisse, Zeeland. Father Adriaan de Mooi and mother Maria Labeur.--Jennifer (JBS66) 19:39, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

I think you are right on both counts! Many thanks for the great tips! I was stumped how to enter her name, because there are so many variants. I will go with the Dutch version. Would that be: Given name = "Pieternella"; Surname = "de Mooi"?--DavidA 21:25, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

You're welcome! The general format on WeRelate is to enter a person's name at birth in the primary Given and Surname fields. If a different spelling appeared in a document that was something like a transcription error - that can be mentioned in the source's note field instead. For Dutch immigrants, we list the birth name primary and the Americanized name as an "Immigrant" alt name. The exception to this rule is for people born prior to 1811 who adopted a surname after their birth. In that case, their full given name and new surname is primary. If a person was born prior to 1811 and retained their patronymic name, that patronym would go in the surname field.
When you create Pieternella's new page, both the Family page and John's page will need to be renamed to show their birth names. You can do that by clicking on the "Rename" link on each page. Just keep in mind that only the first and last names are listed in page titles. If you have any questions at all about using WeRelate, or if you have other Dutch brickwalls, don't hesitate to message me on my talk page. --Jennifer (JBS66) 22:11, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Passport application & ship manifest [11 April 2015]

Wow, you are good; thanks! That's him! The list of ship's manifests at archive.org is a wonderful resource. Now I have to figure out how to use it.

Long ago I found a discussion board where someone claimed that Jan Overbeke had come over in 1848 *with his future wife's family* (Pieternella de Mooij). His parents both died in 1847. It was nice to think he'd been taken under wing by a kindly family, brought to America by them, and then married their daughter a few years later. Very romantic!

But then just recently I found him in the CastleGarden.org website. However I could find no trace of his future wife's family on the same boat. But, I did find a pack of Sauvijns on that boat, and the name rang a bell... Overbeeke's mother was a Sauvijn. Coincidence? Or did he perhaps arrive with his cousins, not his future wife's family?

Now the ship manifest that you so kindly pointed me to clearly indicates that he arrived with the Sauvijns, his cousins, not with the de Mooijs, his future in-laws! So much for the romantic story.

Incidentally, I have been in email contact with a present-day Overbeeke, a very distant cousin, who has helped me trace this fellow back to one Maartina, the first of the Overbeekes. She lived in the late 17th c.

Thanks again for all your help!--DavidA 20:05, 11 April 2015 (UTC)
