Given name John vs Jehu [15 March 2017]

[copied from User talk:Cos1776 on 10 Mar 2017]

Re John Wilson (432), Alt. name Jehu. I assume(ed) you originated this family. Sarah is my 1st cousin 6x removed. All Hinshaw records refer to this family a Jehu & Sarah (Hawkins) Wilson. John should be changed to Jehu, and Maybe John has an alternate name, though I think that that would be incorrect. My feeling is that the cursive Jehu in the old records was incorrectly recognized as John. A rapidly scribbled letter e can look very much like an o, and the letter u like an n. In a family Bible copy sheet that I have it would be very easy to have misread it for "John." It is my intention to add to Sarah's personal area data that I have later today, including the Hinshaw references.
A side note, is it possible to word wrap around picture in that area. If so how or where are instructions.

This person is currently listed with Given name = "Jehu" as an alternate which works for finding him and conveying that Jehu is a variant name. However, the nature of the wiki is that the pages are continually in a stage of development, so it is no problem to update them when new information comes in. I am in full agreement with you that many, if not most, of his early Quaker records show his name as Jehu, so that is likely his birth name. I have not personally examined the probate records to see how the name was written, but obviously Holcombe reported it as "John" and Fox got his information from family members who appear to have also reported the name as "John" - so, he might have gone by "John" in his later years. We don't have any way of knowing this for sure, so we can only go by what the records say. In this case, I have no problem changing the page title and primary display name (i.e. the first row) to his likely birth name (Jehu) to match the Quaker records you post.

Regarding "John" as an alternate name - If his primary name gets changed, then I think "John" should still be entered as an alternate name, since he is listed that way in the later records. If a researcher comes along with those actual probate records to post, presumably they would look for him as "John Wilson".

Re: images - it is possible to word wrap around an image. I could probably show you better than I can explain it. When you get ready to do that, just let me know, and I'll be happy to walk you through it. Regards, --cos1776 15:56, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

I am having some difficuly getting a hand on the "how-to's." I am familiar with word-wrap in MS Word & Publisher.

Having difficulty formatting data for Sarah, so probably tomorrow. Following is what I was going to enter in her Personal History & the reason I believe that Jehu was not known as John during his life. It was tabbed that doesnt seem to work, and spacing is different in some places.

Is what I am attempting to enter to Personal History appropriate for the area?

Sarah Hawkins, daughter of Isaac & Margaret Hawkins married Jehu Wilson, not “John” Wilson. I opine that the references to the name John, very similar in cursive to Jehu, are interpretation errors from the cursive records of the 1800s. Also, I think it would be unusual for Jehu to be known as John, as he had a brother, 1782-1784, by that name. [P. A. Hawkins]

I see in previewing that it is like I was not satisfied with. Phil--PA 21:19, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

I have added Jehu's will, and data to w. Sarah. Where are instructions for adding a talk page for other "persons" similar to the link you have here?

Re wrapping the text around a picture. I tried unsuccessfully using the <break-word> tag on my user page to wrap the text around the picture I added. What is the proper way? I write html (basic), and work with newsletters using Adobe Photoshop, MS Publisher & MS Word.

I assume that you receive an email when I save this? Phil Hawkins--PA 17:16, 11 March 2017 (UTC)

Yes, anytime you add a specific page to your Watchlist (i.e. click on Watch in the left hand menu on that page), you will receive an email notification when the next edit is made. I apologize that it has taken me a bit to get back to you after your message above.
Each Person and Family page has source citation fields designed precisely for entering the type of information you have listed above. I will demonstrate how they work on Sarah and Jehu's page and will also update the page title for Jehu as we had discussed.
re: wrapping text - let me take a look at your User page and get back to you on that.
Just as an aside - I hope that you will stick with WeRelate, despite the learning curve in the beginning. We have all gone thru it :), and I promise that it will get much easier once you learn a few of the tricks. I really believe there is no better site out here for collaborative genealogy. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions that you might have. I am happy to help. --cos1776 15:50, 13 March 2017 (UTC)
