[add comment] [edit] Jan's demise [25 okt 2013]Does anyone know what happened to Jan? I am his great, great grandson and I have his death certificate from Cook County IL, 1892. It states that he died by hanging himself. I believe he was buried in the graveyard in the First Reformed Church of Roseland, later Thorn Creek Church. This graveyard was removed, partially, when road construction eliminated the space occupied by the cemetery. Some remains were moved to Mt. Greenwood cemetery. Later road work revealed that the original work left some remains in place and these were also moved to Mt. Greenwood, with no markers. I believe his remains may be in this unmarked grave. A suicide by an immigrant in 1892 seems fairly unusual, I think. I'd love to have more information. Any help would be appreciated. Rich Ooms--Xchitownboy 05:42, 23 October 2013 (UTC) I got Jan's deathdate from Pim Ooms in the Netehrlands. He was in contact witch a Richard Ooms in the USA from whome he received information. Perhaps you are the same person. Otherwise I can send you his email adress. Paul Snip --paulsnip 08:38, 23 October 2013 (UTC) I am the same person. I got a tremendous amount of information about the Ooms family from Pim. I can trace them back to the 1400's in the Netherlands. One of Jan's sons was named Dirk (Richard) Ooms and lived in Roseland, Chicago until he died in 1959. He was married to Tetje (Fannie) Snip. Her parents were Peter Snip and Grietje. Any relation? I am indeed related to them, but not close. You can find information about the (compleet) family on www.stamboomsnip.nl Look for Popke Snip born 1950. I am helping the maker. B.t.w. I have a question for you. This Fetje (not Tetje) Snip had a sister Antje (Anna) Snip born 9 Jun 1887. She died 21 May 1937 in Chigaco as Anna Devries. She (probaly) was bured on Mount Hope Cemetetery. (Find A Grave) I am trying to find her husband Edward Devries. There is a Edward (Ype) Devries on the same graveyard who was maried to Winnie Kuipers Devries. She died in 1929. Can Anna have been maried to this Edward? In the US Census 1930 they didn't, but it is posible and I have no proof. Can you find out anything more. I my self am living in the Netherlands, so it is more difficult for me. See the links underneath. http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Antje_Snip_%281%29 http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Ype_de_Vries_%283%29 Greetings Paul (Popke) Snip --paulsnip 18:34, 25 October 2013 (UTC) It is possible. The link you gave me to Ype (Edward) lists his wife as Winnie. As you say Winnie died in 1929. If he remarried to Anna after 1929 it is likely (although not certain) that Anna would be listed as his wife since she died in 1937, more recent. That could depend on who was reporting his death. In the US these documents are a county function. Even today they rely on a witness to report the facts of the person in question. Ype and Winnie had several children (1910 US Census). If one of them were the witness for Ype's death certificate they may have reported their mother as his wife, ignoring Anna. I don't know if you have the original death record for Ype or Anna but they may have relevant information and you can order it here http://cookcountygenealogy.com/ and download the record right after payment. Devries is spelled De Vries for Anna at this site. I live in San Diego, CA 2,000 miles from Chicago. If I were closer I'd be happy to do some leg work for you. I travel to Chicago to visit my brother every year in fall but I have just returned from my visit this year. |
