Person talk:James Harroll (1)

Rootsweb Harrell Message Board

There is a microfilm collection of an early historian in Washington Co., Va. I looked up the Herrell, Harrell, Harrold etc. references and here is what I found. If it's not here, then it wasn't on the film either.

James Herrald Sr. b 1734 d 1796 Roll 2 865-868

Harold, son of Richard Note # 1: I have seen no documentation which proves James was son of Richard, however he could be. GLH James d 1796 will dates May 1 1796, probated Oct 1 1796. Note # 2: The James Harroll (Harreld) will and personal property report is in Wash. co. Records. GLH Looks like siblings could be William, Moses, John and ? Note # 3 : James Harrill, Harrell of Augusta co., Va. had brothers named: John, William, Moses, Aaron, Richard Jr. All are named in deeds by Richard SR. made to sons between 1749 and 1751.. Delivered to John Harrill, Harrell in 1758. GLH Aug 18 1749 - Richard Harold Sr. to son Richard Jr of Culpepper Co - John, Moses, John, Aaron on condition they saty with him until they are of age.

Nov 1750 - Richard to run James 156 ac Shenandoah R.

Sept 9 1773 - Fincastle Co. - William Harrold to Nancy Rutherford Note # 4: We have been trying for years to learn who this William Harrold is and if he is the same William who served as a Scout for Capt William Russell in 1774.. GLH

Sept 6 1794 - James Harrold to Willey B. ? - for guardian James Harrold Note # 5: This statement is confusing to me??? James Harrold, Harreld married Willey Bradshaw but I believe it was in 1796. They were married by Rev. Charles Cummings who was a neighbor to the James Harrold, Harreld family... GLH

James Harrold d 1796 on Harrold's (Glendale) Ck Note # 6: James Harrold died 1796 at his home on Harrolls' Creek ( He owned about 400 acres on Harroll's Creek which was named for him because he settled there in 1769 and owned the head springs of the creek.) GLH

Does anyone know about this family? Where they went? Do we have a DNA sample from this group? Note # 7: James Harroll, Harreld settled on Walkers Little Mountain in 1769.. He had two known sons, James and Robert and one daughter named Mary. Mary married John Marshall and they lived on Rattle Creek on a tract of land owned by her father.. He willed her the land in 1796.. James was married but we do not have the name of his wife.. He had one known son also named James who married Willey Bradshaw.. For some reason, which we do not know, James I willed half of the home farm to James II until his oldest son became of age, then that son became the owner. The son was also named James. We know James II had other children but do not know their names. James II died abt. 1799 in Washington co., Va.. Possibly he was injured during the Revolution and his father knew he would not live long, thus the land assignment in the will. Robert Harroll, Harreld s/o James I, served with Evan Shelby in the Battle of Point Pleasant against the Northern Indians. He was horsemaster during the building of the wagon road through Cumberland Gap abt. 1780 and settled land in Kentucky.. Robert did not return to claim 170 acres willed to him by his father and it was sold for taxes. He married the widow of James? Montgomery. The Montgomery settlement in Ky was attacked by Indians and all were killed except his wife whom they took captive.. Robert Harroll, Harrell was a Capt. in the militia at the time and went to her rescue. He was successful and gained a wife. They lived in Warren co., Ky and had many children... No, we do not have a proven descendent in the DNA Project. GLH Bobbi Estes

We now have a DNA sample from a Proven Descendant of Robert Harreld and James Harreld. The results of this sample prove that James Harroll, Harreld who died 1796, Washington co., Va. is not closely related to William Harrell of Wythe co.( died 1822) or to the sons of Richard Harrell, Sr. of Augusta Co., Va. who moved to Nelson co. Ky about 1780.. The DNA of Robert/James Harreld matches the DNA of a proven descendant of Hugh Herrell, Harrald who settled in western NC before 1787 and a proven descendant of John Hareld, Herrald b. 1820 in Russell co., Va. (Moved to Ohio later). This Harreld, Harroll, Harrald group Is NOT related genetically to several DNA participants who have proven their lines back to Nansemond Co. Va. Some researchers have mistakenly stated that Robert Harreld of Warren co., KY waa born in Nansemond co. VA.. At this time the place of Robert Harrelds birthplace has not been proven, but it appears that he was probably descended from a Harroll, Harrald line in Northumberland/ Lancaster co. VA. (Walter and Priscilla Harroll, Harald who died in 1695. This remais to be proven. G. Lee Hearl--G. L. Hearl 15:39, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
Hi Lee.
Glad to see your comments here. I'm wondering if you can provide more of the details on these families, and the details of the YDNA test results? This article is part of The Tapestry project which is looking at persons who dispersed along the Great Wagon Road from Old Chester County PA, to Augusta, to Southwest Virginia, and beyond....and you've got Harroll's in all of these areas and more besides. Also, this article was crafted prior to the development of the Tapestry project. One of a number of articles written to see how we could best use WeRelate to do genealogy. Format and structure of current Tapestry articles is considerably different today. One example of that is the use of the talk page to capture information about the family. This has now been superseded by the use of family notebooks---separate articles dedicated to captureing information about a given family, or sometimes a given person, in a specific area. Eventually these older articles will be reformatted to fit the new approach. Prompted by your comments above, I've updated the James Haroll page to fit better with the new style for the Tapestry.
If you are interested in working on this with us, we'd be more than happy to share information. Also, if you see anything you'd like to add on the main page, please feel free to have at it. This IS a wiki, and everyone is welcome to help make articles better. Q 19:11, 27 August 2009 (EDT)
