James Bates' Children [21 February 2016]

The records concerning the children of Lieutenant James Bates of East Haddam are sparse. According to his 1729 will he had seven living children and at least one deceased daughter, the mother of Elizabeth Fuller of Colchester. The language in his probate record implies that the three youngest daughters, Ann, Abigail and Eunice, were daughters of his second wife, Mary (Tillotson) Borden. The Tillotson genealogy states that James had seven children with his first wife, Mary Lord, but it appears that either (1) that number includes the two male children, Samuel and John, referred to [in error] in Manwaring's abstract of James' probate, or (2) Mrs. Ragsdale found records of two additional children of that first marriage who neither survived until his will was written nor left surviving issue.--jaques1724 03:47, 22 February 2016 (UTC)
