Ellis Island [25 May 2012]
Ite is listed directly following the Dirk van der Roest and Johanna Bouwhuis family on the Nieuw Amsterdam ship manifest (arrival date 19 Apr 1906). Ite was heading to his uncle (?M vd Woude) in Grand Rapids and the van der Roest family was headed to Kalamazoo to his brother C van der Roest. --Jennifer (JBS66) 10:39, 23 May 2012 (EDT)
I was trying to track down this van der Woude connection, and I ran into a snag. I can't seem to find marriage or birth records for Ite's maternal grandparents. Part of the problem is the variety of names they seem to use:
- Kooyinga
- Kooijinga
- Kooijenga
- Iete Folkes
- Yde Fokkes
- Iete Fokkes
- Trijntje Jans de Vries
- Catharina Jans de Vries
- Katharina Jans de Vries
I was looking for a wedding 1860-1862, presumably in Kollumerland, but was unable to find anything like that. Any ideas? I have the info I need to look for Ite's uncles, but not finding something so basic is a bit unnerving. Could they have married in Germany? I haven't seen any hint of a Germany connection in the documents I have looked at.... --Pkeegstra 12:19, 24 May 2012 (EDT)
- I believe this is their marriage. I believe that Jelle is an indexing error - it looks more like Iede to me on the certificate. Also, the children's names match up with their grandparents' names. --Jennifer (JBS66) 13:09, 24 May 2012 (EDT)
- Many thanks! I shouldn't have let myself get stuck just looking at Friesland. (A fresh pair of eyes really works wonders.) BTW, is Kollumerland right by Groningen? Whenever I see people moving between Groningen and Friesland, so often it's from Burum/Kollumerland to Oldehove/Grijpskerk. --Pkeegstra 15:10, 24 May 2012 (EDT)
- Yes, Kollumerland is right on the border with Groningen. Burrum and Oldehove appear to be no more than 10 miles from each other. --Jennifer (JBS66) 18:55, 24 May 2012 (EDT)
- Thanks! BTW, I found a second marriage for Jakob Keegstra 1861 with 4 children, so maybe this elusive uncle is a half-uncle married to one of Janke Spoelstra's sisters. He's definitely not in the Kooyingas or the Keegstras. --Pkeegstra 06:47, 25 May 2012 (EDT)
- I ended up having to work it backwards. I figured out from the census who M. van der Woud in Kent County was, and then I looked for how he was related to Ite Keegstra. He's an uncle via the Ludemas, his wife's maternal family and also his step-mother's first husband's family.
