Person talk:Isabella Moody (1)

Watchers

I believe you have all persons about 20 years older than they were. In 1801, Widow Isabella Moody Frazier married Widower James Paul in Augusta Co, Va. In 1824 or 25, her grandchildren, the children of Samuel, sued her in Augusta Co court for inheritance of her husband, John Frazier.

She would have been over 100 years old when they sued her, according to your dates of birth. I believe this is incorrect, and another earlier generation of Fraziers and Moodys were skipped in your analysis.

It is more likely Isabella is 20 years younger than you show. [20 March 2010]

I believe all the generations of Fraziers and Moodys are twenty years younger than you show, based on Augusta Co Court records.--Csb5100 14:57, 20 March 2010 (EDT)

Wrong Frazier [23 March 2010]

I show that the Isabella Frazier that married James Paul was Isabella, wife of Samuel Frazier. She is the Isabella in this record:

  • Page 140.--15th April, 1788. Samuel Frazer and Isabella Helena ( ) to James Frazer, tract on Long Meadow conveyed 22d February, 1749, by Beverley to John Frazer, deceased intestate, and Samuel is eldest son and heir-at-law.

This Isabella married Paul 20 July 1801 in Rockbridge.

Would like to compare more information on this family, it is very confusing to say the least.--Delijim 10:21, 22 March 2010 (EDT)

It would be most helpful to be able to read the actual court file on this matter, which is listed in Chalkey's as: 1823-1824-1825, the second file number 926. Samuel, being the eldest son, was the heir of John Frazier's property. I suppose it is possible the Isabella Frazier whose deposition was taken in 1790 in the Robert Moody property case could have been Samuel's wife, but the narrative did not so state. The Isabella it mentioned was Isabella Moody, sister of subject Robert, who was the wife of John Frazier, deceased.

What I did note was anything involving the Frazier family, in Chalkey's, involved James Paul, sometimes just as a witness or testor.

The actual marriage record does seem to state that James Paul and James Frazer, the elder, were sureties. The question is which elder James Frazier was this, as there were many James Fraziers among this family. Each brother seemed to name a child James or John or Samuel or William each generation. Is this James the son of Isabella Moody Frazier? Was it a brother of John Frazier, the father of Samuel? Wouldn't he be considered "the elder?"

And, does the actual court file state Isabella "was the wife of Samuel Frazier," deceased? Then, would it not also say who was James Paul's deceased wife? It does not. How many times did Samuel marry? I have found online records which say he was married to a Mary also.

This is confusing and there must be actual records researched to chart each generation of the same names, rather than summaries of court cases.--Csb5100 11:19, 22 March 2010 (EDT)

I have read the court cases regarding this family several times. The way I have the family on WeRelate agrees with several other researchers that I've communicated with. It sounds like you're making assumptions about relationships that are not fully substantiated by Chalkley's. You can't expect these records to spell out the exact relationships, you have take what it gives you and to also look at the other records in Chalkley's regardig this family, too. Bottom line is that the Isabella Frazier that married Paul is NOT Isabella Moody, daughter of Robert. She was the wife of Samuel Frazier, John Frazier's son.--Delijim 12:43, 22 March 2010 (EDT)

If all the researchers agree, you are likely correct. If so, Isabella Moody Frazier's mother was named Isabella, and her son Samuel's wife was also named Isabella, as well as a daughter of Isabella Frazier being named Isabella, based on Chalkey's records and marriage records. And, possibly James Moody had a daughter named Isabella.

I still maintain the generations have been incorrectly sorted as to ages and family affiliation.

There is yet another James Frazier of Rockingham, who, with his wife Elizabeth sued John McMullin, 1787 and 1790.

There was a John Frazier who died in about 1832, who also had a wife, Margaret, who died a few years later. They are buried in Augusta Co, Va,....I believe it is Bethel Church.

There was a John Frazier on the 1820 census of Scott Co Va, as well as William, Thomas, Henry and Solomon.

There is a John E. Frazier, born Rockingham Va, who had brothers Jacob Wesley Frazier and William Frazier, who was born in the early 1800's, per genforum posting of Karen Frazier Scott 4-18-2000. This John Frazier left home with his brother Jacob, when he was 13 yrs old and moved to Ohio, married Mitchum sisters and lived in Bethany, Missouri by 1864.

In 1848, Robert Gay and John W Frazier were security for the estate of Joseph Gwinn. Will Bk 29, Augusta Co, P 173-174. This was after John Watkins Frazier was said to have died, by 1827. I have found no evidence of his actual death date or burial.

There was a Margaret Miller, daughter of Hugh Miller, who married a Frazier before 1808. This Margaret was born before 1790.

There was a Samuel Frazier, born 1802 VA, with daughter Eleanor born 1830 living in Licking Township, Ohio in 1880.

Charting this family members with the same names will be most difficult. But, with enough research, it should be done for as much accuracy as possible in our history.--Csb5100 13:32, 22 March 2010 (EDT)

I may have solved one puzzle. I was reading my Frazier research notes and saw: Samuel Frazier b 1745 d 1788, married Isabella Craig. This is likely the Isabella who married James Paul. And, Samuel's son was named Samuel Craig Frazier.--Csb5100 17:16, 22 March 2010 (EDT)

I've added Samuel Frazier from my files. I didn't realize that I hadn't added him. I also concur that Isabella was a daughter of Rev. John Craig. I have him in my files, and will add his family tomorrow.
