Wife in Groningen? [28 November 2012]

According to his emigrant record, Harm had a wife. But I can find no record of any marriage for this Harm before 1867. Just another small mystery.... --Pkeegstra 16:19, 26 November 2012 (EST)

I went through the "10 jarige tafels" for Stedum on Familysearch, but couldn't find a match,a few possibilitie: - Harm did marry but it's not listed ( in Groningen)and his wife died at sea) - the clerk made a mistake and noted 1 wife. I think we have to find out what ship they embarked and look at the manifest --henk 03:07, 28 November 2012 (EST)

OK, it's good to know we haven't missed anything. But see the next section: I think his "wife" was Fenna de Maar the mother of his children. And I suspect she did die before 1870, since in the census it was just him and his son Jan. It would be interesting to see how they show up in the manifests. Jennifer always has good luck with them. --Pkeegstra 06:30, 28 November 2012 (EST)

possible Harm? [27 November 2012]

Very interesting! It still doesn't answer who Harm married back in Groningen. But the "John H" it lists is a better fit for 7-year-old John of the 1870 census than this John.

> Van Dam, John H.
> b.Nov.03,1863; d.June 08,1890

Could "John H" mean he is the son of Harm? Harm's emigration record lists a wife, but no children, so it is unclear how that would fit.

--Pkeegstra 13:37, 27 November 2012 (EST)

Fenna de Maar had a son Jan in Stedum on precisely the indicated date (3 Nov 1863, aangifte 5 Nov). Registry was by Mechelina Fonck the mother-in-law of Wigher van Dam. Fenna had another son Johannes in 1866 and emigrated in 1867 to Michigan, presumably with the group.

There are two persons Fenna de Maar of approximately the appropriate age. The daughter of Hindrik Willem marries in 1872 and dies in 1909, so the one who emigrates in 1867 must be the other one, daughter of Jan Wal de Maar.

Census [28 November 2012]

Not sure if you found these yet:

Passenger list [28 November 2012]

I uploaded an image of a portion of the passenger list

Arrival Date: 10 Apr 1867
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland
Port of Arrival: New York
Ship Name: The Queen
--Jennifer (JBS66) 07:38, 28 November 2012 (EST)

well I think this prooves that Harm was travelling with Fenna de Maar and 2 young children with his last name, Next question of course, did she die at sea or in the States.

thanks Jennifer, you did it again ;-)

Between the manifest and the 1880 census it's pretty convincing that John Van Dam is Jan de Maar, and that Harm is the one accepting paternity for John. How do I represent that in WR? Put him with Fenna in a single family page, or connect Jan to two family pages? --Pkeegstra 12:45, 28 November 2012 (EST)
Personally, I think with the family pages, you have to represent the data that appears in the birth document. It doesn't state that Harm was the father of either of the children. One could say the Passenger manifest was in error and that the two children were not van Dam's. Perhaps Harm assumed care for the children after their mother died, and called John "son", but his biological parentage is not indicated in the birth record. You could put text on their pages describing the situation with links to the pages for the other "family" members. --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:10, 28 November 2012 (EST)
OK. I wasn't sure if WR interpreted family purely biologically or also as co-resident households, the latter of which would apply to Harm and Jan. I'll suitably annotate the family page as it presently exists. --Pkeegstra 15:35, 28 November 2012 (EST)

btw, a tip I learned for this burial search site: When you find one person that is a potential match, you can find others buried nearby by changing the number in the URL. ie, http://cemetery.grcity.us/BOW/view?personID=CGR111396L to http://cemetery.grcity.us/BOW/view?personID=CGR111395L --Jennifer (JBS66) 14:51, 28 November 2012 (EST)

Yeah! SeekingMichigan has some records past 1920 :-))... and Hiltje's death certificate too --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:02, 28 November 2012 (EST)
