[add comment] [edit] speculation being presented as fact [1 July 2011]The widow of Thomas Hooker, Susannah, m. (2) Elder William Goodwin who d. 1673. This is represented by Family:Thomas Hooker and Susannah Garbrand (3). I'll point out that this pairing is accepted by Robert Charles Anderson, so it should require something more substantial than an Internet family tree to suggest something different. This Hannah Welde on this page is shown marrying Thomas Hooker and then William Goodwin who d. 1689 (nephew of the above). That is the wrong William Goodwin since his widow, also named Susanna, was still alive when she remarried to John Shepard. Further, the death date of 7 Jul 1647 shown for Hannah applies to Thomas Hooker, not Hannah. All of which makes it hard to take this page seriously, as it shows no signs of having been thoroughly researched. In Source:Linzee, John William. History of Peter Parker and Sarah Ruggles of Roxbury, Mass. and Their Ancestors and Descendants, p. 501, normally a pretty good source, the author covers the Weld family. He says Hannah was "probably" a member of the household of Rev. Thomas Hooker, who left a widow Susannah. He claims (I haven't seen it, but perhaps) Susannah and Hannah were "often interchanged", and therefore, "as the widow Susannah Hooker has not been identified, she might be Hannah Weld". This would require that a girl b. 1629 married a man 43 years older than herself, then a man 38 years older than herself. Linzee was clearly just speculating, and in my opinion he did not even make a credible argument. He cited the source Source:Hooker, Edward. Descendants of Rev. Thomas Hooker, Hartford, Connecticut, 1586-1908 which on p. 3 says that Thomas Hooker and 2nd wife Susanna --- had 4 children born from about 1626 to 1633. Clearly, then, this second wife named Susannah could not have been Hannah Weld b. 1629. Combined with the GMB alternative above, I am removing Hannah from both of these marriages and merging those marriages into oblivion. --Jrich 11:31, 1 July 2011 (EDT) |
