Person talk:Elizabeth Unknown (3417)

maiden name, or, the likelihood of confusion given no sources [10 July 2010]

The original immigrant of the Bourne family of Marshfield, Thomas Bourne came from England with a wife Elizabeth --- who died in 1660, and he died in 1664. (See, for example, Source:Representative Men and Old Families of Southeastern Massachusetts, p. 3:1289.)

His grandson Thomas Bourne m. 1681 Elizabeth Rouse, d/o John Rouse and Annis Pabodie (ibid).

This page says Elizabeth, the d/o John Rouse and Annis Pabodie, b. England, d. 1660, m. Thomas Bourne. Clearly this is a combination of the two.

To fix this, I am removing the maiden name of Rouse on the wife of the grandfather, and removing her from the family of John Rouse and Annis Pabodie.

The second correction is justified no matter what. While it is technically possible that both grandfather and grandson married a woman named Elizabeth Rouse, given there are no sources, past practices suggest that confusion is the more likely explanation by many orders of magnitude. If Elizabeth's maiden name does turn out to Rouse, and you change it back, please be sure to cite your sources as a courtesy to the confused reader. --Jrich 11:23, 10 July 2010 (EDT)

Working on this family three years later, I still can find no credible evidence that Elizabeth (_____) was a Rouse by birth. Her Find A Grave memorial [1] does call her "Elizabeth Rouse Bourne", but it should be noted that a lot of questionable data gets uploaded to that site.--jaques1724 17:35, 3 December 2013 (UTC)
