[add comment] [edit] Dedicating this to Elizabeth [12 January 2012]I removed references to the date 6 MAY 1654 found on this page which is the baptism of Mary Sumner in the Dorchester Church Records and is a separate and distinct entry from the baptism of Elizabeth Sumner in 1652. I am not sure why this page appears to combine these two daughters in both name and date fields, but everything I have found on the wife of Joshua Henshaw mentions only Elizabeth. --Jrich 11:18, 12 January 2012 (EST)
[add comment] [edit] Who is Governor Sumner?Removed comment: "Elizabeth Sumner's most prominent ancestor was Governor Sumner of Massachusetts." Given Elizabeth's birth in 1652, about the only ancestor of Elizabeth's that could possibly have been in Massachusetts was her father, and he wasn't governor. And she could not herself be the ancestor of the Governor, as one source says, since none of her offspring carried the surname of Sumner. So clearly, the most that could be said is "relative of", if one has to hype this rather distant connection. Governor Increase Sumner (wikipedia), lived from 1746-1799. Based on a Genealogy of the Sumner Family (Source:NEHGR, p. 8:128d) that follows a Memoir of the Governor (p. 8:105, or available as a reprint here), they were first cousins, twice removed: William and Mary Sumner -> William and Elizabeth (Clement) Sumner -> Elizabeth William and Mary Sumner -> George and Mary (Baker) Sumner -> Edward and Elizabeth (Clap) Sumner -> Increase and Sarah (Sharp) Sumner -> Gov. Increase Sumner. --Jrich 11:54, 12 January 2012 (EST) |
