Person talk:Elizabeth Preston (12)

which marriage [10 November 2015]

Jacobus says "probably daughter of Deacon Daniel Daniel and Mary (---) Preston of Dorchester" and provides no explanation. He provides a list of sources which will have to be followed to see if there is any evidence there, but Jacobus offers none, and as near as can be told from his text, the probably means he has none (the footnotes attached to his text suggest his only source is Peck Genealogy which does not identify her as anything more than second wife Elizabeth), and possibly he suggests this because this is the only Preston family he knows of. After all, John Peck lived in Rehoboth and the Prestons lived in Dorchester, and since if would have been Elizabeth's first marriage, it probably would have occurred in Dorchester and not Rehoboth where it is recorded, and they named no child Daniel.

Plenty of sources claim that Elizabeth Preston m. John Withington, including NEHGR 75:145. In this case, she m. (2) James White and d. 1722 (gravestone). While there is no marriage record for John Withington and his wife Elizabeth, this couple lived in Dorchester as did the second husband, and where the gravestone is found. The evidence for this is not explained either, though oft repeated by many sources. This couple did not name a child Daniel either.

Clearly real evidence is needed. Daniel Preston d. 1707 in Dorchester. He died intestate, and it is not even clear yet that he had a daughter Elizabeth (see here). No birth nor baptism record is found. --Jrich 16:46, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
