[add comment] [edit] Places stated [18 November 2021]I have doubts that Eleanor Hampden was from Great Hampden in Buckinghamshire, a place about 3 miles from where I am sitting. You state her father was John Hampden. The John Hampden who had associations with Hampden House was one of the leading parliamentarians involved in challenging the authority of Charles I of England in the run-up to the English Civil War. He became a national figure when he stood trial in 1637 for his refusal to be taxed for ship money, and was one of the Five Members whose attempted unconstitutional arrest by King Charles I in the House of Commons of England in 1642 sparked the Civil War. This is 200 years after the dates given for Eleanor Hampden. Great Hampton is in Worcestershire. The data on which this page is based should be rechecked and corrected. --Goldenoldie 19:43, 31 July 2015 (UTC)
--Werebear 17:15, 1 August 2015 (UTC) Alterations made after further consideration. Some problems were caused by mis-spellings. Aston, Warwickshire, is part of Birmingham and had a great number of small settlements within it in the 19th century. Astor Hampden or Aston Hampden wasn't one of them, but that's no reason to say it didn't exist in the 15th century. --Goldenoldie 20:19, 25 February 2017 (UTC) The book Shakspeareana Genealogica (see link on her page) asserts that Eleanor was from the Great Hampden, Buckinghamshire family. I have updated her birth place accordingly.--DataAnalyst 20:06, 18 November 2021 (UTC) |
