Person talk:Edward Milstead (4)

Beauplaine Plantation [28 May 2014]

It has been reported on the Person Page of Edward Milstead, that in 1684 Edward Milstead leased "Bow Plane" (or at least part of it) from Giles Blizzard. There is today, in the extreme southern corner of Washington DC, just north of the Beltway, along the Potomac River a sewage treatment plant called "Blue Plain", which is probably the original site of the plantation called "Beauplaine".

Giles Blizzard in his will in 1688 leaves 100 acres to Eliza Gambral. There is much speculation about the relationship of Giles Blizzard to Eliza Gambral, There is a strong argument that she is his daughter, or possibly a step-daughter. But who was her husband? It has been suggested that he was Domingo A'Gambra. In 1682 Eliz A'Gambra is ordered by the court so get medical care for an orphan living with her. But in 1688 Richard Illis married Jane relict of Domingo Gambrall. This implies that Jane was the widow of Domingo. Analysis would also suggest that Elizabeth had died prior to 1688 and Domingo had subsequently married Jane. It is quite possilbe that Giles Blizzard's will was written before 1688, possibly as early as 1678.

Domingo Gambra had a son named Ricardo, whose name was Anglicized to Richard. Richard died in 1707 and his widow Ann Acton, w/o Henry was named admx. of his will. In 1726 Ann Acton released her dower claim to the plantation "Battersee" (which is now called "Harmony Hall" and located at the Fort Washington Historic Site) as the property was being sold by Richard Gambra (Jr.) to Thomas Stonestreet. This couldn't possibly be the same as Johanna Egar who married Thomas Milstead? Wasn't Johanna married to Henry Acton after the death of Thomas Milstead? But none the less, this hints at the Milsteads and Gambras being close neighbors and friends.

+++ I need to ammend this: Apprently Johanna Egar who married Thomas Milstead, was later married to Henry Acton Jr. While Ann Gambra, after the death of Richard Gambra, married Henry Acton Sr +++

In the 1733 Tax List Sarah Gambrill is listed on an adjacent line to Edward Milstead

It is my analysis, and best guess, that Edward Milstead's great granddaughter married William Gambrill circa 1770. She is listed in the will of Edward Milstead III as Ann Gambrie.

It is my quest to determine whether Ann Milstead Gambrill's husband was originally a Gambra, or was he from the British Isles?--PhilGambrel 16:31, 17 May 2014 (UTC)
