Person talk:Ebenezer Cobb (4)

What happened to Ebenezer after 1799? [22 December 2009]

Ebenezer was an administrator for his brother Elkanah's estate in Pawlet, Vermont, last appearing in the record in 1799. There is no stone for him or his wife in Pawlet, nor does he appear in the 1800 census there.

There is an Ebenezer Cobb in Shelburne in 1800 and 1810, who had already done survey work for the town before then. Is he the same one? There is also one in Fair Haven in 1810, but if that's him, where was he in 1800?

Maybe he went west, like some of his brothers and nearly all his nieces and nephews. But if so, I've not been able to find any trace of him.

The picture is now more clear. The DAR website lists Ebenezer as one of the "Patriots" on which membership has been claimed. I obtained a copy of the documentation submitted with that membership application, which includes an affidavit containing a transcript of the family pages from his Bible. From the names, dates, and places mentioned there it is clear that he was the Ebenezer Cobb in Shelburne in 1800, 1810, and 1820, and the one whose death was recorded there in 1826. A number of his children did go west, to Wisconsin, but I've not run them all down yet.
