I haven't seen the source you've picked up on here giving 'Daniel Thomson' but I can say from personal knowledge he was always known as Uncle Donald (he was my father's uncle) by the family. It was never said that 'Daniel' was his christened or 'proper' name. Naturally though, the Thomson middle name certainly fits in. My cousin Maureen will almost certainly be able to say, as this is her direct line. I'll ask her.

Donald and Daniel do tend to be interchangeable.

His death was registered as "Donald T (Daniel)"

Registered and used names are not necessarily one and the same.
