Intermediate Source:Smokey Mountain Historical Society Newsletter, Winter 1986, page 105 fide Larry Cowan, fide Ann Cowan Cooper Email of Fri, 30 Mar 2007 17:41:39 -0600
Datum:

David Cowan and wife, Jane, by deed dated Jan 30, 1786, recites... Between David Cowan, late of the County of Washington, of the first part and Charles Bickley of the other part, Conveys a tract of land on the waters of Clinch river.

A certificate attached reads as follows:

This is to certify that we, David Craig and John Clack, two of the Justices of Sevier County, having received a Commission from the Court of Washington County to take examination of Jane Cowan have according to said Commission this fourth day April AD 1786 went to the house of David Cowan, husband of said Jane Cowan &c."

Comment: Larry's Comment:That information should tie David Cowan, married to Jane Cowan, from Washington County, VA to Sevier County, TN.

Intermediate Source:Email from Dan Welch, May 24, 2008 4:32:53 PM EDT Citing posts from Laura Cowan Cooper, and Margie Cowan:
Datum:Laura Cowan Cooper has previously made extensive posts detailing the connections of a David Cowan that married 2nd Mary Gray apparently in Chester County, PA. This David Cowan had a son named Hugh Cowan (10 Jul 1769 - 1 Jun 1838) that married Rachel Breckenridge (12 Apr 1776 - 15 Mar 1845). This Breckenridge family became prominent in early Kentucky.

Now Margie Cowan has a post from Andy Cowan (different line). Andy Cowan descends from Jane White McPherson of Bourbon County, KY. Jane happened to grow up on lands originally acquired by David Gass which happened to adjoin lands of our William Cowan. So Andy naturally became curious about the adjoining Cowan lands. Turns out William Cowan sold his Bourbon County lands to a Breckenridge family while he lived in Greene County, TN.

This is the first clue I've seen that suggests which Cowan family of early Chester County, PA is worthy of detailed research.
