Person talk:Charles Flanagan (100)

Civil War [23 April 2011]

Which regiment did Charles Flanagan serve in? We're trying to mark all of the Civil War veterans here on WeRelate. Thanks! --Amy (Ajcrow) 21:47, 22 April 2011 (EDT)

I've asked Grace O'Flanagan if there is any further information. Everything I have came from her. All I have is the following: "Charles Flanagan, born 1841 in Russell Co, KY; died Abt. 1862 in Civil War; married Eliza Powell August 5, 1861 in Hartford, Putnam Co., MO." There is great confusion caused by the Flanagans in Crawford Co., Arkansas wanting to blend in to a community of ex-Confederates by stating that their brothers died in the Union Prisoner of War Prison in Alton, Illinois. But we have evidence that at least My G-G-Grandfather, Bryant Flanagan, didn't -- that he died at Pittsburg Landing, TN the night before the battle of Shiloh.

I also had Lloyd's records, not sure if I ever scanned in, and his records indicate that he served in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry and died of dysentery in the Marine Barracks Hospital, St. Louis. I started trying to identify possible candidates for Charles Flanagan but the name Charles was just too common and was too expensive for me to try to obtain all the records from NARA. Given the fact that none of those three brothers are listed in the dead at Alton, the fact that the family was apparently very pro-Union and from a staunchly Union area of Kentucky, I am pretty sure he did not serve in the confederacy though it is possible. It seems certain though that he, like his brothers, did not survive the war... I do not have my notes here in Thailand but at home I did have a list of various Charles Flanagans and their regiments in both the Union and Confederate forces.--Granuaile 01:51, 23 April 2011 (EDT)

Thank you so much for the information! I appreciate you taking the time to explain the situation. -- Amy (Ajcrow) 08:00, 23 April 2011 (EDT)
