Hello. I am researching Mark Evans and his relationship to Methusalem Evans (1696-1779) of New Britain, Pennsylvania. Methusalem (various spellings) is buried in the Montgomery Baptist Church near Colmar, PA. There are numerous records where both Methusalem and Mark are both mentioned that imply they are related. One notable one is in the Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine (vol. 22, no. 4) Page 13: #53: Letters of admin, to Mark Evans & Methusalem Evans of Co. of Phila. Yeom., on est. of JOHN EVANS 31 March 1721. The will of John Evans who is listed as father of Mark also died in 1721. I believe that John Evans had dealings in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

One key to untangling the history and identity of Mark Evans has been the Katherine Thomas marriage of 1723 clearly documented in the Church of Christ records. One theory I had was the possibility that Mark was married twice. At least one source has the marriage date for Mark Evans and Catherine Baxter as 1715, not 1723. There are also some sites that list some of the children as being born prior to 1723. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1586245&id=I2256 This site has son Daniel Evans born in 1717, Nathaniel in 1720 and William in 1722, which could have been Catherine Baxter's children, then Andrew 1725 and Peter 1727 being Katherine Thomas' children.

Do you think it is possible that Catherine Baxter died between 1722-1723 and Mark remarried to Katherine Thomas? ---

Hello, unfortunately, I'm not that familiar with this family (they tied into a family in my "Early Settlers of Augusta County" Project), but I'd rely on whatever records exist on this family before making any changes, and keep any guesswork out of the equation. If you check Rootsweb, Ancestry or Familysearch, you're likely to find just about anything since there are many unproven and poorly researched trees posted.

Also, you might want to consult a researcher that has spent a considerable amount of time looking into the records of this family...

Best regards,

Jim:)
