Person talk:Betsey Houghton (1)

parents [27 September 2019]

I am removing her from Family:Nehemiah Houghton and Eunice Curtice (1). There is no source giving any evidence that she belongs.

There is no birth record found in Winchester for her though there is for almost all the other children of the above couple. She is not mentioned in the Houghton Genealogy in his family. Her birth, whatever it is (1770 per imageless Find A Grave page), does not fit in this family well. This seems to be purely assumption based on a marriage in Winchester. Certainly none of the children names attributed to the her and Benjamin Estabrook in Genealogy of the Estabrook Family include Nehemiah or Eunice nor show any pattern that might connect her to these parents. Nehemiah's will does not name all his children, but specifically does not name Rebecca/Elizabeth/Betsey. --Jrich 18:59, 27 September 2019 (UTC)

I have no dog in this fight, but I did find the following citation online:

"Betsey Houghton (20244);NEHGR, Vol. 37, 1883, p. 397;Marshall L. McClanahan, Ralph & Jane (Stow) Houghton of Lancaster, Massachusetts, & some Descendants;FHC: 0962173 item 5, 1957), p. 18. Hereinafter cited as Houghton, Ralph & Jane - MLM;Ibid. Her married name was Estabrook (20244).She married Benjamin Estabrook (20245) in 1793 at Winchester, Cheshire, NH, USA; DAR Lineage Book, Vol. 51.; NEHGR, 37 [1883]: 397.; McClanahan, Houghton, Ralph & Jane - MLM;, p. 18.She died in 1853 at Allegany Co., NH, USA."

NEHGR 37:397 here is simple a record of the marriage. It calls her Betsey and only specified the year of marriage, 1793. The record submitted to the state by town clerk in the early 1900s is here. It calls her Rebecca and specifies 30 Apr 1793. It names a minister usually a sign it is not an intention but an actual minister return. No indication of who her parents were. I tend to discount DAR lineages, but this particular one here seems to only show the Estabrooks lineage anyway. --Jrich 19:57, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
P.S. the McClanaham book on p. 18 says nothing that I can see: here. On p. 24 here the show Nehemiah's family and does not show any Betsey/Rebecca (there is an unnamed daughter with no information, but since they miss Mary and Sarah, certainly nothing there to suggest they mean Benjamin Estabrook's wife). They cite the Baldwin Genealogy p. 845 but found on p. 846 a passing comment (while listing the lineage of Samuel Prentice's wife Lucretia Houghton) saying Nehemiah had 7 daughters - and the unnamed daughter appears to be nothing more than adding one daughter to make the numbers agree. (Incidentally, adding Sarah and Mary for whom I find records, subtracting Harriet and Betsey/Rebecca for whom I have nothing, I have records showing seven daughters.) --Jrich 20:22, 27 September 2019 (UTC)
