[add comment] [edit] Tower Hamlets [20 April 2020]The Borough of Tower Hamlets, Greater London, did not exist until 1965, so Annie couldn't have been there in the 1890s. I don't know my East End street locations, so I went by the 1891 census and guessed she went to school in Bethnal Green. But then I found the details in her sister Sarah's notes and changed the place to Bromley by Bow. Hope I got it right. The description "Tower Hamlets" comes up in documents pre-1900 and confuses me. The parliamentary constituency for the area was named Tower Hamlets, but its area was divided up into Stepney, Bethnal Green, and Poplar until 1965. Poplar took on Bromley and Bow in 1900 when the County of London came into existence; at the same time Mile End Old Town and Limehouse became part of Stepney along with all the little parishes spread along the Thames (like Shadwell and Ratcliff). See my map [[Image:Tower Hamlet parishes.png]] on most of the place pages for the area. --Goldenoldie 15:53, 15 October 2019 (UTC) Thanks Goldenoldie, the locations related to the school record were based on how Ancestry.com had them organised - the St Paul's Road School records were included under "Tower Hamlets" so that's what I used. But the records cover a range of years so the name of the area where the school was located probably changed over the years. Thanks for looking into this for me--jocelyn_K_B 09:09, 20 April 2020 (UTC) |
