Person talk:Alice Higgins (1)

Identity [25 March 2014]

What is the basis for James Nash's wife's last name? Everything I can find indicates her maiden name as Burgess, not Higgins. In particular see History of Weymouth by Chamberlain 4:421.--Frank 12:33, 25 March 2014 (UTC)

So, at first glance, agreed about Chamberlain, but then looking around, NEHGR, Vol. 151, p. 166, "Probable English Origins of James and Alice Nash of Boston and Weymouth" starts like this: "Descendants of James and Alice Nash of Boston and Weymouth, Massachusetts, may want to relegate Robert and Alice burges of Stanton Drew, Somerset, who have commonly believed to be Alice's parents, to the status of "former ancestors". It is probable that, instead, James and Alice were the James Nash and Alice Higgins who were married in 1633 in Buckinghamshire." The word probably is used because this author, unlike Chamberlain, can't assume that there was only one James and Alice Nash in all of England, but there is a marriage record (parish register published but not readable on line apparently nor indexed by familysearch) and baptism of son James and baptism of son John. The author of the article later published a book on the Nash family noted here. --Jrich 14:52, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
