Wm A 'Bill' Stein Sept. 9, 1920 -- Jan. 14, 2003 Wm R "Bill" Stein, 82, of Miller St died Tuesday at St. Charles Mercy Hospital in Oregon. He was born in Fremont to Joseph A and Loretta (Druckenmiller) Stein and attended St. Joseph High School. He married Betty Billow on Aug. 17, 1946, and she survives. Mr. Stein was employed by the Ford Motor CO in quality control for more than 27 years. He retired Feb. 1, 1983. He served with the U.S Army's 1st Infantry Division during World War II and took part in the invasion of N Africa. He was wounded during the Battle of Kassarine Pass. He received the Purple Heart, European-African Middle Eastern Theater of Operations Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal. Mr. Billow served as Sandusky CO Veterans Service officer. Mr. Billow was a lifemember of the Fremont VFW, Military Order of Purple Heart and the Sandusky CO Historical Society. He was a well-known collector of Fremont memorabilia, affectionately known as "Mr. Fremont." Surviving in addition to his wife are sons Berry W Stein of Belton, TX, and Brad G Stein of Batavia; brothers Robert G Stein of FL and Ted Stein of Plattsburg, N.Y.; sister Isabel Herr of Fremont; and eight grandchildren. He is preceded by his parents, brother Joseph L Stein and sister Virginia Demmel. Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Wonderly-Horvath Funeral Home. Prayer vigil: 8:30 p.m. Services: 11 a.m. Friday, St. Ann's Catholic Church with Father Gerald Chmiel officiating. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery with military services by the VFW and American Legion.
