William Seal was a native of Northumberland, England. He came to America in 1700. William landed at Wilmington, Delaware and settled in Birmingham Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He owned about six hundred acres of land there, and was a distiller. He was a member of the Society of Friends and they decided that it was against their principles to produce anything that would harm people. They asked their members to stop distilling, so he changed his mill to make castor oil.
