Winifred May Allen was born in 1890 at Devonport in Devon, daughter of Mary Ann Allen, formerly Harry, and her husband John Burridge Allen, a seaman. She appears in the 1891 census living with her parents and siblings at 15 Wake Street in Devonport, where the family of seven was living in two rooms.

In 1895, when Winifred May was five years old, her mother died. Her father remarried later that year, but in 1898 he died too, leaving Winifred May an orphan at the age of eight.

The 1901 census finds Winifred May living at the Royal British Female Orphan Asylum in Devonport, listed as May, suggesting she was known by her middle name.

She has yet to be traced after 1901. One possibility is that she was the Winifred M. Allen who died in 1968 in Plymouth, but this has yet to be confirmed.

Although the name here is given as May Allen rather than Winifred May Allen or Winifred Allen, there is no May Allen listed in the birth indexes for Devon around 1890, plus we know Winifred was an orphan after 1898, so conclude that this is her but she was known by her middle name.
