The Topeka Rolling Mill Company, owned by the Topeka Iron Company, rerolled rails for the Union Pacific and the AT&SF (Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe) railroads until the company burned down 7 Apr 1881 and was not rebuilt. Reports indicated there were 100 employees working at the time, 200-300 individuals lost their jobs, and no one lost their lives before the roof of the mill collapsed around 9 o'clock in the evening. - Engineering and Mining Journal 31:269, Col 2 "A Rolling-Mill Burned", 16 Apr 1881
