Willis Morgan Loving.
Having passed the larger part of his life within the borders of Dallas county, it is safe to say that no man is more familiar with the varied changes that have been made than Willis M. Loving, who has witnessed its rapid development with pleasure and pride. When he came here with his parents Texas was a republic, with a few thousand inhabitants only. The wild, unsettled country, the home of the savages and the wild beasts, has grown into a populous and wealthy section of the Union, and in the grand transformation he has taken an active part, more especially in developing the free ranges of other days into beautiful farms and homes. The son of one of the earlier pioneers of the state, he was born January 4, 1841, in Hopkins county, Kentucky, where his father, James Loving, was born, and where his paternal grandfather, Joseph Loving, spent the later years of his life.
But two years old when brought by his parents to Dallas county, Willis Morgan Loving has resided here since, and in the promotion and advancement of its industrial and agricultural prosperity has been an important factor. Soon after attaining his majority he enlisted, in 1862, in Company H. commanded by Captain Cannan, and served in Colonel B. Warren Stone’s regiment until the fall of 1864, when, on account of physical disability, he was honorably discharged from the service. For a year thereafter he was unable to do any work, but having regained his physical vigor he resumed his former work, assisting his father on the farm and at the same time attending school when it was in session. In 1867 Mr. Loving bought a tract of land now included in his present farm at Rose Hill. Laboring with well directed energy, he began the improvement of a farm from the wild prairie, and has now a farm that in its appointments compares favorably with any in the neighborhood.
Mr. Loving married, in May, 1870, Mrs. Mary A. (Faulkner) Ewing. She was born in Lewis county, Missouri, where her parents, John and Martha Ann (Lamarson) Faulkner, spent the larger part of their active lives, going there from Virginia soon after their marriage. Robert J. Ewing, Mrs. Loving’s first husband, a native of Missouri, located in Dallas county with his bride in 1859, purchasing a tract of land near Rose Hill. He enlisted in the Confederate army during the Civil war, and died while in service at Arkansas Post. Mr, and Mrs. Loving have one daughter, Mattie, who married Will Ramsey and has three children, Nettie, Ivy and Mary. By her first marriage Mrs. Loving had one child, Charles F. Ewing. He married Bessie Mott, and they have two children, Charles and Elizabeth. Religiously Mr. and Mrs. Loving are members of the Baptist church.
