William Wright was born on 12th August 1790 and baptised the following month at Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, son of Jenny Wright, formerly Holliday, and her husband Ephraim Wright.

On 1st June 1812, aged 21, William married Susan Primet in the nearby town of Hemel Hempstead. She was originally from the village of Great Wymondley, near Hitchin, about nineteen miles to the north-east of Hemel Hempstead. They stayed in Hemel Hempstead after their marriage, having seven children baptised there between 1813 and 1827. William was described as a chair-maker, turner and carpenter on the children's baptism records. When their youngest child was baptised in 1827 they were noted as living at Piccotts End, on the northern side of the town.

The 1841 census finds William, Susan and two of their children living at the King's Head, which was at 66 High Street in the centre of the town.[6] William was described as a carpenter and publican. The family was still on High Street in 1851, when William was described as a journeyman carpenter.

William died at the age of 65. He was buried at Hemel Hempstead on 9th December 1855. Susan survived him by twelve years.
