Facts and Events
William claimed to have been admitted to the Bachelor of Arts in 1849 at St Catherine's College, Cambridge; and a document to this effect dated 1874 and signed by the registrar of the university is in the family's possession. He presented this document to NZ education authorities and was appointed headmaster of Pakuranga School in 1877. But the only William Woodward recorded as having gained his BA at Cambridge in that year (in Venn's Alumni Cantabrigienses) was a clergyman who lived in Warwickshire from 1865 to 1871, while the other William Woodward was in New Zealand. Either Venn has missed a degree or the New Zealand Woodward took advantage of a confusion of names. (Four Founding Families) References
