Facts and Events
1900 Syracuse Directory lists William M. Westcott occupation blacksmith, 415 Turtle 1903 Syracuse Directory lists William M. Westcott occupation blacksmith, 106 Alexander Grandpa Brown remembers that William Westcott was a blacksmith and a steamfitter. He once worked for Penfield Mattress Co. and his last company was for L.C. Smith Typewriter. He lived near the Reservation, LaFayette and Westcott Corners. According to his obituary, William's last company was the Penfield Mattess Co which recently went out of business (2006?): Syracuse Post Standard, 16 May 1928, Obit: Morris W Westcott, 156 May 1928 . "Morris W. Westcott, 69, of 209 Burt Street, died last night at Crouse-Irving Hospital. He was an employee of the Penfield Bedding Manufacturing company. He was a resident of Lafayette before coming to Syracuse fours years ago. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Westcott; a son, William A. Westcott; four daughters, Mrs. Alice Brown, Mrs. Bessie Hines, Mrs. Clara Eddy, all of Syracuse, and Mrs. Bertha Egan of Elbridge, and one sister, Mrs. Mabel Moore.". A family story that Grandpa Brown had told many years ago was that one of the Westcotts had died in California w/o a will and that he owned land which is now Orange County. Supposedly two brothers came over from Wales, one stayed in New York, the other to California. Never could find any substance to this story until I ran across an article at the time of William's death: Syracuse Herald 20 May 1928 DEATH ENDS WILL CONTEST William Westcott Suit to Be Dropped - "Death of William Westcott, Syracuse blacksmith has ended the contest over the estate of Phillip Noyes Westcott who committed suicide in San Francisco, Cal. in 1926. Westcott said that he was a cousin of Phillip Noyes Westcott and was entitled to a portion of his $50,000 estate. Phillip Noyes Westcott was the son of Edward Westcott, author of "David Harum". Westcott retained Freshman & Auerbach to file a lien against the estate. He died last week which means that the estate held by a California bank will be distributed to relatives." Edward Noyes Westcott and William Westcott were 2nd cousins, William Westcott was the younger by 9 years. William's grandfather, Arthur Greene Westcott was the brother to Edward Noyes Westcott's grandfather, Gorton Waric Westcott. Their great grandparents were Rueben and Hannah Greene Westcott.
